Description Since some people have asked, I've made this as a quick 'what's a spook and what's not'. Since Skull foxes are not copyritten (and to be honest it's a ridiculous notion to even try) I created the spooks to be similar but different, specifically when made as a soft mount.

For a little back history, you can read up on them here: www.furaffinity.net/journal/24…

Earlier this year I went through the process to have Spooks (name, design, and all rights) put into my name. I have the stamp and copyright number for anyone who inquires of its authenticity.

I am flexible and will grant permission to those waning to create Spook characters just so long as credit is given and permission asked for. Where I draw the line is a Spook being made. Let me explain why.

It isn't entirely based on the ownership, but the desire to keep them authentic and the quality up to standard. Each Spook represents my work and in turn me and I want to give my customers the best quality I can give. If someone else makes a Spook and other potential clients see it thinking it's my work, their impressions about my true work will not be truthful.

To younger and newer artists or just fans of Spooks in general. I'm honored you want a Spook, it makes me very happy that my little critters inspire you! But please let me remind you that by law you are not legally permitted to do so as they are under copyright. For example. You cannot go out and make an iPhone without Apple not getting upset (Just look at Samsung and Apple, those two are still going back and forth!).

If feathering and LED's is something you want on your soft mounted fox by all means go for it! But please, leave off the elongated ears as that is what really sets a Spook apart from a Skull fox. Please also refrain from calling it a Spook as that too can and has caused some confusion in the past.

As always, artwork shown and in my gallery is not for others use. Not fur tracing, copying, referencing, reposting, RPG, etc. etc. etc. Work hard like I have and practice, it's much more satisfying and you won' have half the internet lusting for your blood.

Just curious because i am doing some research atm, do you or anyone here know where skullfoxes originate from? Are they kitsune (yokai), do they have a specific name other than simply "skullfox"?

So you're the one who created spooks then?

This species is so beautifully done, yet creepy at the same time - definitely one of my top ten favorites on DA. *-*

Do you allow people to make Spooks if they request your permission first? Or pay a fee?

Drawing is acceptable sure! Just need to be credited if they are please

Arkaede In reply to Sharpe19 [2014-06-02 18:58:54 +0000 UTC]

Of course! ^^ And it's okay to make a skull fox character as long as you are credited for the breed?

Skull foxes aren't my species, only spooks :3

Ok stupid question, a couple years ago I saw your spooks as well as other foxes/canines with skulls from other artists and taxidermists. I created a mutant/creature character with a skull face, at the time I did not notice the longer ear length of your spooks and my character has pretty long ears. Though he is not a fox (Still debating if Maned Wolf or just some creature that size but black) and he has a reptillian/dinosaur-like tail and very long legs. It's still ok to keep him right? And it's not illegal or anything?

Generally speaking t sounds far enough you are good :3 the reptilian tail and other features. Not to mention it was most likely made before the copyright was created so no worries!!

Phew, ok thank you! PS I absolutely adore all of your art and creations. I have a few pelts of my own because you gave me the confidence to be able to show others that it is possible to love animals and respect and care for them even after death. I hope to become as talented as you someday!!

I always love your spooks, and it's very neat you finally got them copyrighted! I was actually afraid of making something similar due to the fact everyone would think I was making a spook, when by definition, I would be making a skullfox! I'm glad you posted this with all the details of definition :3

I would love to get a species of mine copyrighted as well, as soon as I get enough crafts of them made and costumes

how hard was it to get that copyright?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to ItsProbablyMars [2013-12-04 12:54:06 +0000 UTC]

There's a few hoops to jump through and a fee up front. Takes a couple months

ItsProbablyMars In reply to Sharpe19 [2013-12-04 14:59:55 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure someone out there is going to copyright skull foxes. LOL

They can try, but proving it will be impossible lol.

ItsProbablyMars In reply to Sharpe19 [2013-12-04 19:14:03 +0000 UTC]

How did you prove it? In seriously considering copyrighting something.

Sharpe19 In reply to ItsProbablyMars [2013-12-04 19:46:33 +0000 UTC]

Provided evidence when I posted something, date, time stamp, hard copy, etc. I did everything through snail mail but I know you can do it online.

Ice-Artz [2013-12-03 21:43:09 +0000 UTC]

When you say the Spook is copyrighted, do you mean you copyrighted the species? Or am I getting mixed up with something else? xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to Ice-Artz [2013-12-03 21:50:19 +0000 UTC]

The design/species is copyrighted yes.

Ice-Artz In reply to Sharpe19 [2013-12-03 21:59:31 +0000 UTC]

How did you copyright it? I've been wanting to copyright a species of mine that I use for my characters in artwork and animations for a while now but I never knew how. People always told me you can't copyright it because "You can't copyright and idea" or something like that.

Sharpe19 In reply to Ice-Artz [2013-12-03 22:05:19 +0000 UTC]

You may want to look up whether it's a copyright or a trademark you are wanting. Google "how to copyright", there are several legal websites that can walk you through it. I did it the old fashioned way through snail mail, but with my dad being a song writer, that's how I learned how to do it.

"I own skullfoxes an u r stealing my copyrighted creation"

You know, the normal attitude for DA. Good to have this around now, simple link and all questions answered haha!

I wouldn't mind be so skeptical if Sharpe19 would put the copyright number and stamp in the image or the description to allow people to actually check it, seeing as anyone can say they have the information. And on another note am I the only one noticing a correlation to Cubone from pokemon here?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Whitefeathur In reply to hillad00 [2015-06-26 13:33:53 +0000 UTC]

Sure.

As for the correlation; skull faced critters are older than cubone, though that one being the most notable/popular example makes it the first comparison. Skull faced critters in themselves as a creature are common.

Nice of you to clear that up - I have a skull fox and I understood people's confusion and I hate it when people take other's ideas and don't think of the consequences. Hopefully this will help cut down on that.
