"Doesn't it hurt?" Raedor ran his fingers carefully around the silvery marking, his eyes fixed on the strange pattern.
"No. It's not a punishment... it's a reminder," Laria replied, her voice struggling to remain light and carefree.
"Who needs a reminder that they're a slave? I imagine it's difficult to forget."
Laria let out a bitter laugh, her light mood sinking into the shadows of the campfire as she answered: "It's not a reminder to me; it's a reminder to other people: I don't own myself. My allegiance is elsewhere, no matter how I feel about the people I meet. I am not trustworthy."
"That must make it hard to trust other people."
She laughed again, but it was dark and angry. Raedor gave her inquisitive look, and she returned his gaze with a dangerous glint in her eyes.
"I haven't trusted anyone since long before this happened to me," she said in a cool voice. "And if you're smart, you'll learn to do the same."

She really isn't trustworthy, Raedor. You should maybe leave her alone. She's already told you that you're a hopeless idiot.
