A guide I put together on the Smoothing Modifier in Daz 4.Be warned it is large! Download for full view.
This is by no means an in depth guide, but it does give some good visual examples.
All comments welcome.
If anyone wants to use this, feel free, but please leave the signature in the bottom right corner as it is.

Please note that there have been minor changes to the smoothing modifier tool since DS 4.5 Pro was released.
Most of these changes are fairly minor, however the default smoothing iteration setting is now 2 and NOT 20. Overall the smoothing modifier has been improved in both performance and effectiveness however and most of this tutorial should still apply.

I've yet to utilize Daz but I really like to learn how 3d modeling and posing is done, and even as a tutorial it's satisfying to look at!

Np. It is a little outdated now, but the basics still apply. Only the base settings have really changed.

DS4 Mesh Smoothing puts a nasty crease across V4's upper eyelids that I find annoying as hell. I wish DAZ could find a way to implement smoothing on a node-by-node basis rather than the current global smoothing they've implemented. Sometimes, you only need a little smoothing in one or two select areas.

Yeah. In my search on how to use this I actyually came across a video by Daz where they use it on a node by node basis, but that must have been an earlier implementation... I mainly want it for the joints (elbows, shoulders, knees, etc) but I would prefer not to use it on the face, as it smooths out morphs too... However I have tried and failed to get it to work in a node by node basis. Maybe they will bring that functionality back one day? I hope so anyway.

The initial release of DS4 did implement mesh smoothing on a node-by-node basis, but DAZ went with the global implementation in later releases, because they said node-by-node was too costly in terms of memory usage and processing power. Seems a little backwards to me: I'd think it would be less costly to use it sparingly on a joint or two rather than smooth an entire figure. Hopefully, they'll come up with something in the future. Another handy 'smoother' for use on the Gen4 characters especially is the Convert to SubD. Like the modifier, it's not a cure-all, but does work great with less distortion when making scene or camera adjustments. With the modifier, I normally use it for pantyhose and at the very end of my workflow. It does the trick most times. Good tut, by the way!

Thanks, yeah I've discovered sub-d, but that seems better for softening the mesh, whereas smoothing can effectively "fit" clothes. I haven't played with sub-d too much yet though.

Heh, me too... me too. In DS4.5 however it seems to work a little different, so I may need to update this. There is also a "push" modifier to explore, whach can do some strange things to hair.

That is really a powerful tool, i stumbled only by accident over it in DS 4 Pro. The makers of DAZ-Studio create always awesome new functions for every new DS-Version, but often "hide" them very clever and made awful (if any) documentations or handbooks.

Agreed. I have to say that if they made the documentation freely and easily available (and complete, not "under construction") they would be able to move their product better.

Oh man! I knew of the the Transfer Active Morphs option, which I've been using to help with poke-through! I had no idea this Smoothing option was even available!

I've put it off for a while. I stumbled across this accidentally and had to do some research to find out how it works and how to use it. If only Daz could get their website sorted there is a wealth of info old and new there, but I feel like Theseus in the labyrinth, but without the string to guide me!
