Description
The Mask of Fu Manchu is a Pre-Code MGM/Cosmopolitan film released in 1932, featuring Boris Karloff as Fu Manchu and Myrna Loy as his daughter: Fah Lo See as the sadistic villains. Both in 'yellow face'. This was the first film in which audiences got hear Karloff's voice and his trademarked lisp. Many people thought it was affected as part of the Fu Manchu character.During its initial release, The Mask of Fu Manchu was criticized by the Chinese government, and the Chinese embassy in Washington launched a formal complaint against the film for its hostile depiction of the Chinese. The speech where Fu Manchu tells his followers to 'Then conquer and breed... kill the white man... and take his women!' was singled out for strong criticism.
Some other critics also objected to the film's depictions of violence and sexuality. The film's re-release in 1972 was met with protest from the Japanese American Citizens League, who stated that "the movie was offensive and demeaning to Asian-Americans." Because of the criticism of the film's racism, the 1992 VHS release of the film removed several scenes containing the most criticized lines of dialogue, such as the "Kill the white man" speech.
Today it's an interesting piece of Hollywood history. The latest release of this movie by TCM has fully restored the film to its original version.

Myrna Loy, in her autobiography, said that she and Karloff felt that the screenplay was ridiculous and played their roles with humor.

Oh I heard that too, She said they played it campy because there was no other way they could do it without feeling ridiculous. That one scene though...Where she just kind of stares as they inject him to make him their mind slave. She looks so creepy!

This was what Myrna was relegated to playing under contract until The Thin Man put her on the map as a major player in 1934. Still, it's a fun little movie. Especially this time of year. Although, I'd venture you have to watch it in context of it's era or else it's a horribly racist film. Oddly enough I'm doing a commission of these character this week. I'll post it when I'm done.

Fantastic attention to detail. I agree with ~Atlasfan, you should have a go at some Charlie Chan. Not forgetting Number One Son.

this is some serious inking, how long did it take and what brushes you use!?

I ink with a Raphael 8404 Martre Solinsky #0 brush and Speedball India ink. I use either tech pens or Pitt pens for the straight lines. It took about 10 days of picking away at the inking a few hours at a time per day. I use work like this to 'warm up' on inking. I always have 5 or 6 pieces laying around the studio to work on.

The main thing with brush inking is try and get a nice thick to thin line. Most people use a #3 or #2. Which I've done in the past. I started using the #0 about 5 years ago. I find I have more control with it. Your stuff is getting there. Draw as often as you can and preferably draw from life. Practice control on the the thick to thin brushes lines daily if possible. Just make a page of lines and try to vary the width.

Wonderful depiction of a great film. Fantastic job on Fah Lo and the little details in the background. Would love to see some Charlie Chan pieces - those were great films. I'm glad that those films can be viewed and enjoyed in an historical context these days and not banned or cut.

One of the things that really struck me about this film was the ornate detail in just about every frame. I wanted to capture that in the illustration.
