If you are seeing this post in your inboxes again, it is because I have decided to retcon its place in the Serina project back a full ten million years back into the early Ultimocene. This places these species well before gravediggers and woodcrafters, and thus they become the first near-sophonts mentioned in the Ultimocene rather than trailing the gravedigger/woodcrafter arc, but is a necessary move for the smooth continuity of the project's intended direction.
