I am confused. Was the adoption because the woman was sad or because the dog needed a friend?
Since the young girl is with the dog in the last frame and none of the adults, this makes it seem they only adopted for the pet.
Or maybe the young girl is like the woman from the movie Orphan and her and the dog are the only ones left alive in the house?

In today's society (in America) if you and your significant other are having problems a baby always fixes them...
Because working out your issues through talking to each other and making sure you have a stable environment is never the culprit, it's because they are missing another mouth to feed and more bills over their heads. Yep More bills will solve all couple's problems.

Yes, it's daddy's master plan. He bought a dog, to give to the kid, to plan the dog's death, so the kid get sad, mom offers a new dog, He knew the kid would not stand too long, he finds a away to get rid of the kid and get a daughter. Makes perfect sense and not crazy at all, it's easier and cheaper than just have another kid. Or...the new girl and the boy are the same person.
(PS: No, I don't have any problem, my mom took me to the doctor to make sure... 3 times...every month...for years)

No, I'm not mentally unstable for 100% agreeing with what you said.
Maybe... there was actually not child in the beginning! What if the mother was actually hallucinating of having a child and dog at the start of the story! What if slowly by slowly, the father is giving the mother medicine to cure her of her disease! And so that the mother won't go to depression he just adopted the kid and the dog to substitute for her "previous" son and pet.
