The Trade Federation cargo transport freighter/ barge/ cargo ship build by Hoersch-Kessel Drive Inc. for the Trade Federation had been clearly modeled after the Lucrehulk and was also build after the XS stock light freighter, and YT class light freighter models of the Corellian Engineering Corporation and inspired by models of the former subsidiary company of the Techno Union as they had helped the Trade Federation in parts with the goal to make it modular. Not only could the Saucer fit an internal cockpit and engine section surrounded by an additional outside cargo ring much like the bigger Lucrehulk, it was also designed to carry Hardcell-class interstellar transports of the Techno Union and the InterGalactic Banking Clan as well as Trade Federation cargo rings. This way the so called Trade Federation Saucer was a multi-role and multi-purpose vehicle that was quickly famous by traders, smugglers and space pirates alike, because much of the ship was additional secret cargo space to avoid growing Republic taxation of Hyperspace routes, as well as smuggle secret military equipment and other goods during the Separatist Crisis and the later Clone Wars. Between 40 to 80 meters width, 110 to 220 meters long and 88 to 110 meters height/ depth the various types of the Saucer Class were well liked and long used even long after the Clone Wars and the stop of their own production in favor of new classes and models. With a minimal crew of 1 to 18 and a maximal crew of 200 they could carry up to 2,000 passengers and had a cargo capacity of about 24,000 tons. With a maximum atmospheric speed of 2,000 km/h eight primary thrusters, primary hyperdrives of class 1 or 2 and class 10 and 12 backups aided by a navicomputer they were equipped with four quad turret laser canons, four laser canons, four missile launchers, four proton torpedo launchers (six torpedoes each) and flairs, all official to counter space pirate activity, secretly to arm them for the upcoming Clone Wars. Used as a cargo vessel, transport, freighter and smuggling vessel alike, some even found use as ships for space pirates themselves. With the beginning of the Clone Wars, most of them were used by the Separatist Alliance, the Confederacy of Independent Systems, which changed the original yellow and white colors against the blue and gray of the CIS.

A well liked vessel, the Trade Federation Saucer was also known for being quit long running and skilled crewman could undergo most minor and major repairs themselves. Because the Neimoideans of the Trade Federation went for low building costs, they actually reused some parts from older and/or other models, meaning that spare parts for the saucers also could be easily found, something that only increased their popularity among many traders, smugglers and space pirates alike. But while many major compartments build-in for smuggling were soon found, skilled crews soon rerouted internal cables and mechanisms to create new hidden ones, or simply learned to use every spare inch of the ship, even within walls, floors and roofs to not raise to much obvious suspicion when using the most well known secret storage and hideout locations. Because of it’s multi-role, durability and good repair ability, some Outer Rim worlds not only employed the ship for their trade companies, local merchants, traders, transports, smugglers, or space pirates, but even for local police, military, bounty hunters and other forms of law enforcement, especially since the separated roundish storage compartments of the ring could be easily refit to not only transport cargo and passengers, but actually serve as holding cells for prisoners and slaves alike. Some even smuggled exotic animals and other illegal substances, trade goods or other successors in these cargo and passenger rooms whenever needed. This was also why the Trade Federation Doughnut-shaped cargo ring of the central Globe ship in combination with one another was also known as the Saucer, because of the way it looked. Able to defend itself against attacks from all surroundings, the Saucer itself was soon famous among traders, merchants transporters, as well as smugglers, space pirates and other legal and criminal professions alike. Because they were so interchangeable with some other Trade Federation, Techno Union, InterGalactic Banking Clan classes, yes even other ship models that made them not only so long running, but actually so interchangeable that Uglies came out that were basically completely new ship types and models themselves.
