Description
#10 in a series of 12 tutorial sheets created for the SpongeBob crew in 2005 (4th season) on Roundness and Depth. If you treat your characters as dimensional objects that have weight and depth, your drawings will look more solid and believeable (no matter how cartoony they are).Previous tutorials at:

If I worked for the show, I go for the flat designs once every season as a brief off-model moment.

Wonderful ! Thanks for making all of these tutorials ! I like to draw more realistic characters, but they have a very cartoonish air most of the time, so this helps !

Bravo! Unfortunately most cartoons today don't have roundness and depth, they look more like cardboard cut outs then actual characters.

Aw, man! I can think of several cartoons that would benefit from looking at this page.

Hi invader! Even though many shows are designed to look flat, you're right in that artists need to understand these principle before thay can break them.

These are great. Not only for new artists to start practicing, but also for more experienced artists to be reminded of!

Hi Abe...thanks! I agree that the more experienced an artist is, the more he/she should be trying to constantly improve. I LOVE a good "how-to-draw" book! They don't come along very often, but Ben Caldwell and Kyle Baker have put out some great ones. Others that look great (but I haven't read yet) are Tom Bancroft's Creating Characters with Personality and Harry Hamernik's book on Caricatures.

Thank you very much for tutorial 10.
I think I'm going to try drawing Mr. Krabs more often now.
He was always a challenge for me to draw since the first attempt: [link] That comic is very old...

I think you did a really good job with mr Krabs in that comic. He's pretty hard to draw...especially his eyes!

Thank you very much, I agree. That's why I was afraid I could have messed it up.

AH cool. This one is a little harder to visualize but I think I do it already without thinking about it. I think I've called it,"giving the character body".
Another nice piece.

Hi annie...thanks! A lot of these things are done by artists without thinking about it, but when it comes to teaching others that are struggling in this area, it's helpful to try to spell it out. Glad to see you're keeping up with them ^_^
