Description #7 in a series of 12 tutorial sheets created for the SpongeBob crew in 2005 (4th season) on Dynamic Angles

We all too often draw figures in straight up-and-down poses. To give a character life and visual interest, try to keep the character off of the horizontal and vertical axes.

Check out lots of free video tutorials on my blog at >> [link] << See you there!

Hi Sherm, I was watching you draw SpongeBob characters on SpongeBob Season 3 DVD, and you are very talented. I was impressed by the fantastic work you do, and Googled your name to find out what other things you have worked on. Please continue creating, Patrick Star is my fav. I think you have a nice smile too, if you don't mind me saying so Have a great night! -Ashley

Thanks a bunch for tutorials, you really seem to know a lot about drawing dynamic stuff! I have a lot of troubles trying to make anything look exciting and dynamic.

Excellent point. Another reason for dynamic angles: perspective. The illusion of a three-dimensional image in a two-dimensional medium is fragile. Static full-forward or full-profile poses destroy that illusion. Dynamic poses help trick the eye, making the image feel more "real".

Well-said! And the extension of the three-dimensional illusion is to help get the viewer/reader immersed in the story. Thanks for the input

Thanks for posting, these are really good.

I find this one to be the most motivating out of the bunch. I have to remind myself to be more daring in my poses and perspective every now and then, but it feels nice to have it on paper!

Adorable drawings.. and of course tons of movement. Great advice as always. Its funny how some seemingly simple principals can have such a big impact.

Wait, is it even possible for Spongebob to punch something to make it move? I mean, everybody knows he barely has any muscles to even lift a drink! I call for OOC, here!

Also, awesome tutorial. Currently practicing this and this will help me a lot. Thanks! ^_^

Yet another great tutorial,
angles are always good to
practice with, otherwise they
come out stiff, and not alive.

Your tutorials are a ton of help,
especially with remembering the basics.

I can't wait to see the other tutorials!

Ooh! More excellent points!
Keeping the things inside of the border filled with angles is especially a good point. I like to make little comics (well, back before school and commissions were eating my free time), so that really speaks to me. I've gotta stop taking the easy way out and put more fun angles into my panels.

Hi Mystic...I think you'll find it's not so tough -- I just took a look at your gallery, and you've actually used this principle in your piece called "Deviant ID."

Happy drawing! --Sherm

I see. I am currently studying them AND I keep character tutorials (to help me practice) and various Techniques, such as Porportions, Lines of Action, and Skeletal Poses (The 3 key techniques that I need to learn) into my special Composition Book, that way I can use it for reference. Because it is easier for me to learn it if I actually do it myself.

shermcohen In reply to MysticArk [2009-11-20 22:17:13 +0000 UTC]

You're right on the money! I couldn't learn perspective from a book...only when I tried to work out the drawing problems could I finally understand all the things the books were saying! Draw on, my friend ^_^

Thanks, Sherm! I learn by being hands-on, meaning that once you do it yourself, you'll be able to learn it. Keep it up on your awesome storyboarding, character designing, and cartooning! Hopefully you will probably meet me in a few years, once I get to California.
