Description Whenever I feel down, I like to turn to my favourite horse breed for inspiration. I love researching the stud book of the North Swedish Draft. I sat looking through some pictures, and suddenly realized it would be interesting to see how much the breed has evolved so far. So I tried to find pictures of individuals with at least three generations of Swedish bloodlines, old and new. Since the Norwegian Døle has had a major impact on the Swedish Draft, and our breed still has an open studbook, it was rather challenging finding somewhat pure Swedish lines.

Enough rambling. This was relaxing and easy work to do for once. I can't take credit for the silhouettes really, since I just painted over the photos. I think it's interesting to see what kind of differences 100 something years can do to a breed, though.

This is very interesting! It is amazing how quickly the breed can change along with people's perceptions of what the breed should look like

I love the thicker necks on the more recent ones. They definitely look better than they used to, especially the stallion.

Sure is. I do love that "teddy bear-look" of the breed today. You just wanna hug them when you see them.

Wow. That's fascinating. What caused the changes in the crest and heavier body style?

Yeah, ~Padawancats is right. Many of the early imported Norwegian stallions had more body mass than the average Swedish native horse, and the Døle had a major inpact on the breed. It's virtually impossible to find Swedish Drafts with no influence from Norway. For example, the heavier, "new" stallion in this picture has Norwegian ancestors in the 5:th generation on his mother's side.
Even though the neck has gotten thicker and more arched, the impression of a heavy crest on today's individuals is also due to a lot of hair.

The Døle was actually used to try and save the old Swedish native breed (that later became the North Swedish Horse) from being cross-bred into oblivion.

I very easily get carried away, wanting to tell the entire history of the breed, so I'll leave it at that (for your sake!)

Awww, I wouldn't mind. I love this stuff. I've always been of the opinion that you can never, in your entire life, learn too much about anything.

How was the old Swedish breed created, if you don't mind my asking?

I would guess selectively breeding for those traits. maybe some crosses...
