I don't like Shirou much either, but he was better in Unlimited Blade Works anime. I've seen fan comics where Rin has been the master of other servants like Gil Archer and it seems to be much more interesting than Shirou XD

Yeah, my main dislike for Fate/Stay Night is that it revolves around Shirou and his ideals but if you don't like or care about him, then your enjoyment of the story can be affected. And personally, I am more interested in the Servants' story more than the masters' since they're legendary heroes and all, it would be interesting to know about their life, regrets, wisdom etc.
I agree, Gil is terrible, but he's so entertaining.
