Description
So... here's the piece that I've briefly mentioned previously. It's fanart of the mobile game Fate Grand Order, featuring Saber (aka Altria Pendragon aka King Arthur). This was made as a gift for someone very special to me, hence why I took a whole month to make this. This is probably the largest digital work I've done so far. I don't think I'll be making a habit of it though, since my computer started to really struggle while making this towards the end lol. Anyways, I hope y'all enjoy this piece and are staying happy and healthy out there!---
Oh boy. As I said, I spent a month making this so there's a lot to say about the making of this. Because I wanted to be able to print out a physical copy of the work, I made the canvas 8.5in by 11in. This was way bigger than my usual canvas sizes. As usual, I started with rough drafts before doing the lineart. I did multiple drafts for the main aspects of the drawing. I wanted to take my time with the lineart, so that ended up taking me a couple weeks alone. That and trying to draw a bunch of flowers is very time consuming. There were much regrets while I drew those lol. Some parts also didn't have lineart, like the hole in the sky. I had the lineart for the flying petals fade from bottom to top, to sort of blend the non lineart background to the lineart of the flowers in the foreground. After that, I decided to go against my usual process to do the background first. I figured it would get the harder part out of the way first. If there is an easy way to create a layer for masking for anything within the lineart, I definitely don't know it lol. I sort of accomplished it by filling in the background with one color then filling in the rest with white while the lineart was invisible, but it didn't get it quite right. I initially used the white part as a placeholder while I did the background, but I ended up keeping it in the final work (which is why there's a white border around the lineart). The background alone ended up being A LOT of layers, to the point where I lost count of them. I made good use of my program's ability to name and color-code layers throughout the whole process, which kept me from forgetting which layer was which. (I definitely ended up with more than 50 layers when I finally wrapped up the project.) The clouds alone took several layers by themselves lol. It was probably a good idea that I did the background first since, upon closer inspection of my references, I had gotten a lot of the details of Saber's wrong, particularly with her armor. (For example, her gloves/gauntlets are rather different from each other. I wouldn't have realized it had I not been looking closely enough lol.) I ended up correcting and redrawing parts of the lineart as I progressed, which was really unfortunate. This just goes to show that you should really pay closer attention to references the first time xD. Even so I couldn't get all the details quite right thanks to my premature lineart (just don't look at the chest armor too closely!). Anyways, the shading ended up being different depending on the (virtual) material. Stuff that was shiny, like armor and hair, I used the hard-edged brush while stuff that looked more like fabric, like the dress, I used the airbrush for a softer edge. I honestly didn't shade the flowers because I was too lazy to try to shade each individual flower, that would've taken forever. Speaking of flowers, the flying petals were the last part I did, as I wanted everything colored before figuring out their placement. It's kind of like what I did with stars in previous works - some of it is random, while others are carefully placed. I had rushed a bit towards the end of the month-long process (I had a bit of a deadline), so I ended up excluding details I wanted to include (like the motes of light that I wanted to add to complete the Excalibur Noble Phantasm, but couldn't figure out in time, as well as more clouds). That and, as I mentioned, my computer was starting to chugg from the strain of how large (data wise) the work was getting. I feel like I ended up with an odd blend of the Anime/Manga style of the foreground with the more painterly style of the background. I hope it was an alright depiction of Saber and FGO ;^_^
Apologies for the really long spiel about how I made this...
