Description Here’s a sketch dump of various pokemon that I’ve drawn realistically over the past while. :3 As the title suggests, you can look forward to seeing more of these.

I will now use my limited knowledge of biology to try to explain these designs. Some of it may not make perfect sense or be completely possible, but I’ll try my best. I’m sure you can all match the pictures to the descriptions. Feel free to leave your opinion as well, even if it’s contrary to mine (believe me, I won’t get mad). I enjoy getting lengthy comments. I’m interested to here if anyone else has some theories too. ^-^

Poliwag, Poliwhirl, Poliwrath and Politoad: These guys would basically just be frogs with poliwag as their tadpole form. Poliwag and poliwhirl would be highly adaptable and live in a wide range of climates from temperate to tropical. Poliwhirl that live in more temperate climates would evolve to poliwrath while ones in the tropics would evolve to politoad. Poliwrath have powerful bodies for fighting down large insect pokemon to eat. Politoad would be more like tree frogs but would still spend a lot of time in the water. They’d use the strange antenna on their head to sense disturbances in the water. However, there are few poliwraths and politoads in the wild as they need special items to evolve. And as it says in the pokedex, the swirls on their bellies would be their intestines showing through their translucent skin.

Dunsparce: They would be strange snakes with a short but thick and muscular body. They would be nocturnal and live in caves and underground dens left by pokemon like sandshrew and vulpix. They’d have the ability to slither backwards and would escape into their holes in whatever direction is faster. This has lead to the myth that they drill into the ground with their tails, which they can’t actually do. Their tail has a rattle at the end like a rattler, except instead of making noise it has a point that it can use to defend itself if need be. That has also backed up the drilling myth. They have highly faceted eyes that are extremely light sensitive. This gives them excellent dark vision but causes daylight to cause them extreme pain. If they are forced out into daylight, they cover their eyes with their thick eyelids and use the small feelers on their chin. Dunsparce are also able to fling themselves into the air by curling their body inward. They do this to catch low flying zubat and bug pokemon. They are also known to eat small mammals like rattata and also pokemon eggs. They swallow their prey whole. Their jumping ability had led to the myth that they can use their wings to fly. The actual use of their wings is unknown. They may have been left over from a previous evolutionary stage or may be the beginning of a future stage.

Tangela and Tangrowth: These would be bipedal reptiles with stubby front legs and a symbiotic relationship with a special type of vine. The vines would be planted on their bodies from birth and completely cover them, sapping energy but providing protection and camouflage. Their eyes would be on stalks so they can poke them out from underneath. They would live in tropical environments and would hunt by sitting still and waiting for prey to walk by. Tangela are fairly small so they would secrete a potent poison from the skin around their toenails (hence their red feet) to defend themselves from other predators. The poison weakens as they evolve, but they grow to a whopping six feet tall! By this point they could pretty much eat anything and swallow it whole (they would by absolutely terrifying!). Tangrowth are even more merged with their vines than tengela and would be able to use them as arms. The “fingers” of these arms would have thorns that also secret poison (though a weak one) to paralyze their prey as they swallow it. Tangrowths are extremely dangerous and it is not recommended for trainers to try and catch them directly. It is suggested that they raise a tangela to its evolution instead.

Pichu, Pikachu and Raichu: They would be lagomorphs (like rabbits and chinchillas) that would be fairly common, highly adaptable and have a wide distribution. I’d imagine there would be subspecies that live in different environments, such as short haired, longer eared ones that live in deserts and lighter coloured, heavily furred ones that live in cold climates. They would be friendly pokemon that are generally considered cute and good pets. They would probably have a similar diet to rabbits, consisting of grasses, fruits, vegetables and also possibly nuts and seeds. Pichu would be babies and would not become sexually mature until they evolve into pikachu. Few pikachu evolve into raichu in the wild because a thunderstone is needed.

Tropius: My tropius is somewhat based after the tropius by ([link] ). It would use the same system of using the green plates on its body to steal chloroplasts from algae (see her description for details) but I wanted to try to justify its ability to fly. They would be reptiles with stout bodies and hollow bones like a bird. Despite their slow and heavy appearance, they are actually quite fast and light but fragile. I think my tropius would also have to be somewhat smaller than the pokedex says it should be. When looking at them from above with their wings spread out, they would be somewhat airplane shaped. My picture shows their wings being smaller than they would be. The larger, frontal plates would be the wings while the back ones act as a tail. Tropius live in herds migrate every year from the Hoen region to the Sinnoh region to avoid the cold seasons of each. These migrations would be the only times they fly and they would spend their time in-between eating and conserving energy for the trip. Since flying takes a lot of energy, the stolen chloroplasts would be very helpful during the trip. When taking off the tropius would run a long distance to gain momentum then jump off some sort of cliff or ledge. Every year there could be several fatalities for those who failed to take off properly. They are poor flyers and that’s why they don’t do it very often. Tropius would eat a wide variety of plants and leaves and use their long necks to reach them. Like AnnaJ’s tropius, the “fruit” on their necks are ornaments that only the males have and are used to show off during mating season (again, see hers for details).

Azurill, Marill, and Azumarill: Instead of the usual rodent-like design people tend to use for these three, I decided to go with amphibians. My reason for this is because I wanted to justify the floating ball on their tails (I don’t buy the pokedex description). Since amphibians have poorly developed lungs, they take in oxygen through special pores in their skin and just like with the rest of its body, these three are able to take in oxygen thought their tails. The end of the tails can be inflated and deflated at will. It acts as a “snorkel” and provides them with a continuous supply of oxygen while they are underwater. If danger is sensed, they can deflate the tail, pull it underwater and hold their breath like regular frogs. The tail has folds so it can be flattened against the body when it’s not needed. When deflated the tail is leaf shaped but it becomes quite round and spherical when fully inflated. They have extra sensitive hearing thanks to hornlike protrusions on their heads into which their ears (which are outer eardrums like a regular frog) are set. Even when underwater they can hear when danger is nearby. They live in freshwater ponds and feed mainly on small insect pokemon, algae and other organisms in the water. Azuril, which is the tadpole form, doesn’t use its tail to take in oxygen until it’s nearly ready to evolve because they have gills.

Absol: Absol live in mountain habitats and have a medium-sized somewhat feline-like build. However, they are not felines and have some goat-like characteristics. Absol have broad, hoof-like feet that are well suited for climbing the rocky mountain terrain in which they live. Their fur is thick and warm to protect them from the elements. They also have horns that may once have been similar to those of a goat, but they evolved so that one is on their forehead and the other is morphed with the ear and forms a scythe-like shape. The other ear is floppy and falls to the side of the head. Their long tail is flexible and helps them balance. Absol are omnivorous but prefer meat. Unfortunately, their hoof-like feet that evolved for climbing are poorly suited for hunting. They are usually only able to catch unwary ratatta, and only if they’re lucky. They are also scavengers. When needed they supplement their diet with fruit, berries, roots and other plants. Absol are excellent climbers and are faster than any other pokemon in their habitat. They also have the supernatural ability to predict the future due to the unique shape of their horns, which act as receptors. They are benevolent towards humans and will often appear before their settlements to warn them of natural disasters.

Igglybuff, Jigglypuff and Wigglytuff: These three would be hairless mammals that live in temperate to warm climates. They have few features similar to any real animals. Jigglypuff and wigglytuff have large eyes because they’re nocturnal. The eyes glow white when reflecting light, but when seen in proper lighting they are actually a pretty green and look surprisingly friendly and cute. Igglybuff are helpless, blind newborns and have red eyes until they evolve and the pigment sets in. Because they are hairless, these three do poorly in colder climates and hibernate during winter. They live in burrows that they dig out, though they may use abandoned burrows. Though they seem fragile because of their smooth, hairless skin, jigglypuff and wigglytuff and quite versatile due to their highly adaptable diet. That’s why they are able to live in some climates that may seem unsuitable. They will eat anything from plants, fruit, insects, and small pokemon. They will also scavenge. They feed their young through regurgitation. They live in small family groups with defined territories and would leave scent markers to define them. They also yowl to define their territories. The yowling is a surprising soothing sound that could be described by some humans as singing. They are said to have the power to put things to sleep with their “singing”.

Carvanha and Sharpedo: Sharpedo are like a cross between a shark and a sunfish and live in many major oceans. Their behavior is similar to that of a predatory shark. They usually swim slowly to conserve energy but in a pinch can move quite fast for short distances. They’re able to enhance their speed by forcing water out of the specialized gills behind their eyes. These gills don’t have enough surface area to provide them with enough oxygen, so they have a larger, extra gill behind them. Like the great white, sharpedo usually hunt by ambushing their prey from below. They eat fish pokemon as well as larger water pokemon. They will also sometimes swallow objects that they can’t digest. Shapedo may occasionally attack humans by accident if they mistake them for their usual prey. Their pre-evolution, carvanha, is much smaller and is like a piranha with decorative fins like a beta-fish. Unlike their evolution, carvanha can be found in both salt and fresh water. That is because they migrate up rivers like salmon to reproduce every year. It is likely that they loose their ability to reproduce when they evolve because sharpedo aren’t found in fresh water. Despite their large teeth carvanha are omnivorous though they do have a voracious apatite for meat. Both sharpedo and carvanha have sensors on their face that detect blood as well as very rough scales.

Pachirisu: Although they’re supposed to be squirrels, I decided to make pachirisu a sort of peculiar lizard. This is because of their apparently hairless body, thick tail, and spikes. Pachirisu would live in temperate to warm climates. They’d have the peculiar ability (for a reptile) to sit up on their hind legs and manipulate objects with their claws. Even more peculiar, they have two teeth at the front of their mouth that are suitable for biting open nuts like a rodent would. They would feed on nuts and seeds but wouldn’t store them like a squirrel would. They would probably also eat insects and some plants. They’d make their homes in rotting trees and other dark, damp areas that can be found in forests. They could sometimes be found sunning if they find a warm spot. Their spikes would serve the purpose of protection against predators. Like other reptiles, they’d hibernate during winter.

Whoa that was long.

I love your unique interpretations of all these!

Tropius does indeed look too unwieldy to fly.

Your Marill line expose is so cool! And the Pachirisu is wicked awesome. (Although the jigglypuff line kinda creeped me out. XD)

I'm really glad you pointed out Absol's feet! Everyone says that he's supposed to be canine/feline but his feet look almost elephantine. XD My theory was that he developed those big ol' spread out feet as an adaption for walking on deep snowy plains (an interpretation helped out by his white color) and I gave him an evolution with plantigrade feet (meaning "walking on palms"), an ursine.

Thank you. A lot of these designs I don't care much for anymore. For some of these, like the jugglypuff line, I've thought up new designs that make more sense. I'm also more keen on keeping pokemon as the animals that they were originally based off of (though radically different interpretations can be intriguing as well). I really need to get around to posting some of my newer sketches. I still like my absol though. They definitely have snowshoe feet.

I've been wondering how tropius could fly, and for my realistic pokemon series I was thinking of making it flightless. The thing is that the wing shape on the official art just doesn't cut if for flight. However, your design looks surprisingly plausible. Would you mind if I used it, or something similar to it (with credit)?

Interesting takes on the Marill line and Pachirisu. Like most people, I saw them as mammals, and interpreted Marill's tail bob as a fat deposit. But yours definitely provide food for thought.

The jigglypuff line is scary.

Wow, you read my descriptions? That must of been hard, since I now realized how riddled with grammatical errors they are. XD

Thank you. I'm glad you like my explanation of tropius. It was difficult to figure out how it may work, and I honestly didn't think my picture portrayed it very well. You can go ahead and use it as the basis for yours if you want. ^-^ perhaps you can draw it better than I did. As for the marill line and pachirisu, I'm actually thinking of redrawing those as mammals. Though I'm having a hard time figuring out a possible use for marill's tail bob. If you ask me a part of the body that floats like that pretty much advertises for something to come and eat it. XD I don't like how I drew the jigglypuff line anymore. I think I'll redo those too.

Heh, it wasn't so bad : ) I thought it was interesting!

I doubt I'd draw it better (I'm really no good at drawing, I just do it for kicks). But I'll give it a try.

Perhaps the bob is a social signal, like the tails on a Ring-tailed Lemur? It allows a group to keep in sight contact while under water. And if they can be deflated, they can easily pull them under to escape predators. Or they may depend on Marill that are not currently under water to act as lookouts?
Anyway, just some ideas.
