Description
The 'Advanced Shielded Battle Armor' program was created shortly after the material for energy based friction shielding was discovered. While other programs focused on simpler shield implementations to give added defense to large scale mech units, the ASBA design would focus on compacting the technology, both powered armor and shields, down into a smaller package with a focus on more discretely applied firepower.
The program would evolve bulky armor down into a more infantry friendly package. This new philosophy of use (a flexible soldier instead of walking tank) would come about by passing the task of defense from armor plates to shielding.
As the true potential of shield tech was revealed, the Elemental program was started with a concentration on developing such potential. Shielding materials being rare and expensive to synthesize, the ASBA program was redirected to rebuild their prototype into a new standard production suit that would return to armor for defense. It is now the standard mid weight powered armor of the Ranger army, coming an many variations and roles.

I always struck me as odd how little thought was put into certain sci-fi technologies. If you could fold space on a small scale level or tear someone apart at the quantum level as part of the design of a teleporter or carefully manipulate hard-light or invisible energy fields to creat a force field. you could do ALL SORTS OF THINGS WITH THAT!!!! But NO!!!! No one ever thinks about all the applications, DO THEY!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!??

Shimmering-Sword In reply to Vadrigos [2011-06-01 05:29:33 +0000 UTC]
Indeed. Which is why I'm avoiding antigrav tech, everything would be force weapons
But yeh, the energy shields can do a ton of different things, and some of the highest class (planned far future) Elementals will use those same space folding tricks

One idea I had was replicating the effects of telekineisis using force fields. Or something like the Displacement Engine from Farscape which opens a wormhole into a sun and drops a piece of star on an enemy ship.

So do these guys come before the elementals? or around the same time then get dropped in favor of the ele's or end up being a cheaper, more cost effective off-shoot? You need a friggin timeline, at some point when your free hop on it. It'd be an interesting read.

Shimmering-Sword In reply to Mister-Jackson [2011-06-01 05:46:58 +0000 UTC]
These are direct predecesors to Elementals, and Ele is a slimmer ASBA with shields. I guess my description didn't word that quite clearly

Mister-Jackson In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2011-06-01 06:09:33 +0000 UTC]
Not at all, it's all muddled up in there. It kinda makes em seem like they were before the ele's and ended being a possible offshoot due to relative cost or something. Would they still bother with these guys by the time the ele's came out? that'd still be pretty cool well maybe minus the bulky-ness ya dig? They're meaty to say the least.
