Description
Here's the 4th piece I designed for the 3145 Marik TRO. One of the less exciting of my batch, I still enjoyed coming up with something akin to combining a hercules transport with a space shuttle (now with guns!)The 195 ton Caerleon Assault Craft is designed to ferry Battle Armor to and from the battlefield, but unlike it's more vulnerable cousins that must stay out of the fight, the Caerleon is suited for going in hot. It is unstable in atmospheric flight however, so requires skilled piloting.
2 Light Gauss Rifles
2 Long Range Missile 15s with Artemis IV
20 tons of Battle Armor capacity

Reminds me of the Beriev A-150 project(www.google.com.br/search?q=Ber⦠). Was it an inspiration to this design?

its so cool! I like the way the wings bend down low (i think) to settle the tyres

Only 20 tons if this really is unstable it would be torn to pieces by evening the lightest mechs

20 tons of carrying capacity, it's a 195ton craft.

No modeling involved. I drew and inked this one in Photoshop.

how did you get your line art to be so clean?

Shimmering-Sword In reply to partical0 [2013-09-19 03:24:39 +0000 UTC]
Straight lines are done with a brush trick that places lines between where I dot my pen (just holding shift key). Curved lines are carefully freehanded. Also just as much as I place lined down, I cut into them with a white brush to alter their thickness and shapes.

Hmmm...I'd say it can carry at least 1 or 2 30t mechs with the Battle armors.

The key to keeping this thing in the air is to replace the duck tape that holds the wings together after each flight.

20 tons of capacity isn't a whole lot when you're talking armor and mechs, considering the average tank runs 45+ unless it's a hover. Can't even pick up some light mechs. Seems more like a good way to drop infantry to flank a force. I could be wrong since my knowledge is only limited to the Battletech and Dark Ages books

I just do the lineart because it's the required style of Battletech interiors. If I'm going to do something in color I'll properly paint it from the start.

Do you use modeling software to block these out first, or do you draw them in perspective by hand?

Shimmering-Sword In reply to BenMMiller [2013-07-01 00:47:37 +0000 UTC]
The 2 mechs in this set I used 3D for pose and perspective, but all the ships had their initial design sketches cleared as final poses, so I just did some simple perspective grid corrections and inked them.

see this is the only problem i have with the battlemech universe, surely this thing (if you replaced the cargo hold with more missiles) would be able to take out a 'mech or 2, and you coud maybe even get some lighter armed fighters armed with heavy antitank missiles (or, god forbid, Nukes) to kill the 'mechs, and the mechs would be barely defenceless, due to their slow movement, and restricted firing angles.
My point is, aerocraft would be able to decimate a pure 'mech force with ease. So why are mechs still in use?
π: 0 β©: 1
Shimmering-Sword In reply to Qeztotz [2013-06-30 09:18:02 +0000 UTC]
Arguing what unit would be superior in a mech game is already past the first defeating point, mechs just aren't good combat units in general. With that point in place, you simply accept that any game that features mechs as their leading combat unit shouldn't be scrutinized for realistic combat, because it's not trying to be realistic. "Rule of Cool".
Just so you know though, aerospace assets are effective against mechs that aren't equipped for anti air. The reason mechs dominate this game is because they're durable, but what makes other units truly weak are weapons designed to counter them. If a player knows he's going to fight against combined arms, he can bring the proper counter measures. If you bring mechs expecting to fight enemy mechs and you're faced with vehicles and air assets, you will lose.

"mechs just aren't good combat units in general". True, but they can provide good fire support for mbt's in some situations(remember C&C3 where Mammoth tanks were leading attack, taking most damage while Steel Talons medium mechs used their heigth to shoot over them, keeping themself safe behind heavy armor and providing additional firepower?)

Shimmering-Sword In reply to Arklyte84826 [2013-07-01 16:27:42 +0000 UTC]
But the height of their guns has nothing to do with having legs, they're simply taller (you can make a tall tank). Mechs are inefficient by weight and are overly complex, so their only use lies in doing what a tank absolutely cannot do. Examples would be traversing mountain terrain and other steep inclines of soft ground, or highly uneven rubble.

i bow to your infinite wisdom, but just so i know, is it possible to field an army that is entirely infantry?
π: 0 β©: 1
Shimmering-Sword In reply to Qeztotz [2013-06-30 09:50:11 +0000 UTC]
Yep, and as my previous comment said, if you go against mechs optimized for fighting other mechs (most are) you will steam roll them. However, if they see your shenanigans coming, get ready to be hit with machine guns, flamers, pulse lasers, inferno missiles, various other missiles, plasma rifles, LBX (shotgun) autocannons, the list goes on
Combined arms (including mechs) is the most effective way to play, pure mech forces are simply "easier" to play.

i think im going to go for a 2 part force when i play, im thinking a sort Elysian style army, composed of equal parts of infantry and aerocraft, maybe a spattering of mechs, but theyll play support to the infatnry.
oooh, i just found out there's jump infantry in the game
*smiles evilly*

Nebfer In reply to Qeztotz [2013-07-06 04:02:56 +0000 UTC]
Yes their are jump troops, Also many Battle armored units mount built in jump jets as well. And it's possible to make a viable infantry army, though it's not as easy, but their are a fair number of tricks one can use to make a fairly nasty force.
It should be noted that the art on this page, is for a "space shuttle" that can carry a Platoon of Free Worlds league Battle armor troops (B-techs equivalent of Space Marines so to speak). It can also provide some ground support from it's heavy armament, or defend it self form aerial attackers.
