Description

First off (here we go again) check out my Rangers Project kickstarter! www.kickstarter.com/projects/1… It's getting close to funded but needs that last push to make it.

Now back to the art. This was commissioned by someone over on the Battletech General threads in 4chan's traditional games board. A rather quick piece, so it's not as clean and detailed as my typical work.

A Mad Cat III and a Thunder Fox (both 55 ton medium mechs) of the Lyrian Commonwealth Jaegers are returning to base after a raid against enemy forces (likely Jade Falcon). They're fairly beat up, but their targets fared worse. A departure from the typical Jaegers half checkerboard pattern, this pair are marked with dazzle stripes.

I didn't like quardupled mechs.

Until I saw Thunder Fox right now. Heck, I would love to see those in the Mech Warriors PC games.

I thought that the MadCat mk.III was a jump-capable assault mech... not a medium. >> Then again- I'm hardly an expert and probably completely wrong.

No, that would be new getter robo. Oh you mean battletech mechs? Nope, Atlas III for longrange, and www.sarna.net/wiki/Neanderthal for melee. Thunderfox is good. Not great.

since pacific rim, has Jaeger just become a term that refers to mecha in general?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

GentlyDangerous In reply to yahnlao [2013-11-13 17:51:56 +0000 UTC]

The Jaegers in this instance are a Lyran Commonwealth Regiment. The Commonwealth has heavy Germanic trappings, apart from the fragment of the former Terran Hegemony they control which is heavily Scots-Gaelic.

In Mechwarrior/BattleTech the usual Term for a mecha is 'Battlemech' or just 'Mech'.

Jaeger in this case means that is the unit name ("Lyran Commonwealth Jaegers"). I know it means something but I can't recall what.

Half of lance lost, madcat's right arm destroyed, right left cut, battle was morbid - i can clearly see AC 20 holes, laser guys + either 1 ssrm or ecm scorch.

4.8/5 (weird camo)

No full lance, just this pair, so they didn't do that badly. You better learn to like dazzle camo, it's the best

smokeTH In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2013-11-16 04:15:13 +0000 UTC]

Why would anyone go into raiding without full lance? I mean they certainly could use pair of Blades as sit-rep "roam ahead and don't step into atlas" half-wing.

@ Creeperslayer

The Madcat is an iconic Battletech/Mechwarrior chassis. There's been a variant in almost every game.

I likes this much.

The two legged mech looks as if it were inspired by the game MECHASSAULT because of its shoulder rockets and the three toed hydrolic feet. the other one looks like a more mobile and stable version of the new military robot dog.

The Mad Cat has been around since 1990, man. MechWarrior, MechCommander, and MechAssault are all based off of the BattleTech tabletop wargame.

Though if you want to get technical the Madcat III was inspired by the Madcat and came out the same year Mechassault did so in a way you're right. The Thunderfox was a few years after/

Serious question for you - I'm considering building a Mech out of either wood or plastic. What would be an easy, entry-level design to start with? I have a bandsaw, sander, and hand tools to work with.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Torham123 In reply to alberach01 [2013-11-12 17:40:57 +0000 UTC]

I am not model maker, but from my experience ans a carpenter I would say that wood might be easier to shape, but it will have greater potential to split and ruin your work. Especially if you are not familiar with how the grain in the wood works. Plastic might be harder to shape, since I would imagine it would be easier to melt or burn when sanded. It is however a very homogeneous material so you will have lower chance of accidental damage due to splitting and cracking.

Thanks, that helps. Now, if I could just figure out which mech to build...

Shimmering-Sword In reply to alberach01 [2013-11-15 23:15:43 +0000 UTC]

The Mad Cat is a very blocky mech with very few complicated angles. I made a wooden madcat in high school with a band saw and wood glue. It was pretty easy.
