Looking at this, and other tips and tutorials on how to draw chainmail makes me understand why Red Sonja and other characters only get a bikini-top worth of armor! Time consuming to draw!

I was actually looking for a tutorial on how to do them with a pencil, but then I found this. Simple, but a good tutorial. I plan on trying digital art soon, so this may come in handy.

Thank you for the tutorial! I've put it to great use with one of my pics :thumb358654536:
I found a way to make it a bit more time-efficient, as well. If you want a more uniform style, make one really nice dark grey ring, then copy it. You can multiply it several times and arrange them into a multi-layer sheet. Merge those layers and you'll have a one-layer "sheet" of rings, of which you can then select and arrange as you want, then lock the layer and shade/highlight as needed.

You're very welcome! I'm glad it was useful to you.
Ooh, clever! That would save a lot of time indeed.
Only downside would be that you couldn't make the rings smaller/slanted to indicate curves, but even so, it's a lot more efficient. c:

I figure for special circumstances (such as curves) you can just leave those spots open and make a new layer to "patch in" the needed rings. I did that with my drawing, by adding in the necessary curves needed to show the chain wrapping around an object (such as an arm). One thing I found that was -very- helpful from your tutorial was that you really can make an effective-looking mesh with just three or four colors. *thumbs up*

I'll give you an advice. Make a CIRCLE brush instead of hand drawing everything, and then one click one circle.
This isn't convinient if you wnt o be picky and rotate them according to perspective.

-Shrug-
That'd require me knowing how2brush. Which, well, I don't.
But hey, good tip for other people. C:

you can easily do it in 2 minutes.
[link]
In Painter you can't start from scratch but you can make a .Jpg of your brush tip then open it in Painter . 6*6 inches 300 dpi make a nice cricle.
First make another cathegory of brushes "Chainmail" or whatever (capture brush cathegory) in the small triangle on brushes , you'll need a picture of for expample real chain mail to repressent that cathegory (make a rectangural selction on it) once you do that open cricle.jpg that is black cricle (make a rectangular selction) and click the same small triangle and go capture dab. nothing seems to happen but you did it. press control+B and try it
the "variants" are sub-brushes

Don't have Painter. >_>
I use OpenCanvas.
But thanks for your explanation, I'll see if I can apply it to oC. C:

The drawing at the end is actually a commission, so I didn't design the character, but I'm glad you like it. C:
Drawing chainmail isn't really that much work- it's just repetitive. XD
But, um, you're welcome? C:
