Description
This is a method I've found to creating realistic Chainmail. This was created in Photoshop, with a graphic tablet, HOWEVER you don't need either to make this.
You could easily recreate this in any graphic program you own. And the best part is, you can easily do it with a mouse. In fact, making the rings with a mouse is probably the easiest method.
If anyone can't figure out how to do it with a mouse, I'll gladly show you.

For any questions regarding folds and bunching of Chainmail, Please see my photo explanation with real images of chainmail bunching.

Hey, I created an endless pattern with your method:
And here is my finished picture too:

Nifty Idea to make a seamless pattern. I really like your picture. Might I suggest a little more contrast on the chainmail? without it, it kind of looks like a paintedΒ teeshirt. Β Happy arting!

Thanks for the tip.
I made not so much contrast because I hopes this way it wouldn't be so obvious that the chainmail doesn't follow the forms... (and I felt a bit unsecure about using a pattern, it was the first time I did that)
I think I leave it as it is for now. (This picture took so long, I want to continue with others)
But I'll keep it in mind for the next time I draw armour.

Thank you very much. I used your method for some pictures I'm currently working at. Now I can proceed with the armour.

Too bad I can't do this with pencil and paper

kurisutin In reply to Lemniskate [2014-05-29 05:05:17 +0000 UTC]
You could. It would just stake some patience. The easy and repetitive nature of using a program would be lost though.

Thank you for making this.Β I'm using your method for a piece I'm currently working on, it was a nightmare initially trying to draw it without any knowledge of how chainmail is actually constructed on my part.

when i get home later tonight, i'll show you how crushing (where the arm bend is) would look. I made real chainmail, so I'll take a picture.

Cool, but is there a way to manipulate the texture in Paint Tool SAI so it makes the crush effect, or do I have to do it manually?

kurisutin In reply to CappuccinoSquid [2013-11-16 00:20:49 +0000 UTC]
Honestly, Im not sure. I dont use sai. In photoshop you can use warp, but you have to be careful to not stretch the rings too much. As far as crush goes really what you'd need to do it make the right overlap closer together. I have sai, i'll load it up to see if there is any way.

greetings, Ive created a facebook group known as the Imagination Trading Post (feel free to join, its an open group) to share tutorials, patterns, finished project pictures, advice, from costumed enthusiasts from various fandoms from historical reinactment and SCA to Larp, cosplay, steampunk, or theatre groups. We intend on making a website if the facebook group is a hit.
2 Questions:
1) Do you want to join and/or know anyone who would wish to join?
2) Would I have permission to place your pattern(s) on the site, as they may be helpful for those wishing to create chainmail?

Hahahaha! You know P-Chan... Sometimes the most tedious is the shortest route. It really starts to multiply on itself after the first 9-10 steps. Besides, I've seen all kinds of things, from unrealistic brushes to drawing each individual circle and linking them. At least this way, its just copy paste.
