Description My first tutorial!

Made for [link] which I'm probably too late to enter, but oh well. It would be a shame to let a good tutorial go to waste.

The idea to make this tutorial came to me when I was learning how to do dragonscale weave and realized that most tutorials are making it more complicated than it needs to be. So here it is, my take on it

If you're new to chainmail, and would like to learn the basics, here's a good link to start: [link]
It will tell you about materials, sizes, tools, how to make your own jumprings (which is not that hard actually, although you can never get the same quality as the good commercial jumprings) and lost of other bits of information.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask I can point you to a few places with not too expensive jumprings, if anyone's interested

Sorry for the insanely big file

So, I know this was like 3 years ago, but do you think you could do a tutorial (either with diagrams or pictures) on how to join strips of this up? Like if I was making a shirt for example, how would I join the sides of the two lengths together.

When I was reading the first step of the weaving, I was so confused because it wasn't making any sense. Seriously took me 3 minutes to realise they were 3 different sections, oops. Haha, I feel so silly.
Great tutorial and really easy to understand. I've done dragonscale before and the adding small rings through the large, I find, is very hard to do and way more time consuming, I'll be trying it this way next time I do it.

if you want to make your own rings, electric fence wire is perfect for making links just get yourself a wooden dolroad or metal rod, wrap the wire as tight as you want, spread the wire out so you have a long spring, and start cutting at the bottom parts of this spring, and you will have a lot of rings.

This is by far hands down the best tutorial that I have come a cross, I have looked at videos and other tutorials and they did not make to much sense to me but the way you have this laid out is perfect! And I agree with you about doing the small rings as you have makes it a LOT easier thank you thank you thank you!! Now I can start on this crazy idea I had lol

These ring sizes are AWESOME! They made a really nice, dense Dragonscale, I love how it looks!

Chainmail is amazing, I hope you do try it, it's so much fun making it. And a little frustrating at times I'm planing a few more tutorials, next one will be easier to make, but just as beautiful

I may have to try this one of these days.. the pictures are quite clear and do a wonderful job showing what you're explaining. Thank you for taking the time to make this!

I tried I actually took a ton of pictures to make sure I have some sharp, clear ones. It was quite a learning experience. I'll be making a stepping stone tutorial in the near future, if you're interested

Well, coming from someone who is very visual based when it comes to learning, I'd say you succeeded.

I'll have to keep an eye out for that.

This one is relatively straightforward, you should see how some of the other weaves are done. It looks like a random mess, but then you twist it around, and suddenly voila, you have a bracelet or a celtic star or something.

Go for it! It's great to try new things You can buy rings cheaply on ebay and etsy, I can give you a few links if you want. Or you can make the rings yourself

I want to make the rings too...I cant buy online but maybe the "easy" store here have the things I need

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tannalein In reply to adorablestejidos [2013-05-24 21:53:42 +0000 UTC]

Some arts and crafts stores have it, although not where I live I guess I'll have to make a tutorial on making rings.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

adorablestejidos In reply to Tannalein [2013-05-24 22:43:23 +0000 UTC]

dont worry Im used to think and make the things with the materials I can get or buy. Also, that site is quite clear about how to make the rings too

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tannalein In reply to adorablestejidos [2013-05-30 18:48:36 +0000 UTC]

Then maybe a few tips. I use a setup with a hand drill like this one: [link] it was a lot easier for me than making that wooden what-ever-you-call-it. Some people use power drills, it's faster, but personally I'm afraid I'd pull my arm off or something This video: [link] shows a great way of cutting the rings in a way that leaves a more straight edge (unless you can get your hands on a jeweller's saw). Hope this helps.

I could be missing this, but how many of each rings do we need?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tannalein In reply to kirilee [2013-05-23 17:39:02 +0000 UTC]

You did It's about 300 of small ones and 300 of big ones for the length of about 18 cm. You could always go for thinner. Two rows thinner would be around 200 of each.

Did you check the link in the description? There's a quick overview there on how to make them. Although, you don't need the whole mandrel setup if you can bully someone into giving you a hand

Since I doubt I'll have the time to make my own tutorial, these two links basically cover the way I do it, if you do decide to give it a try: [link] [link] (minus the jeweller's saw, I can't get my hands on one). Some people use power drill, but I myself am afraid I'd pull my arm off or something

Great tutorial. Well photographed and you weave the same way I do. I find using the large rings first makes it really hard to do. Small rings first makes the weave come together much faster. Well done and clearly explained. Thanks also for including the points that go wrong. Faved.

Thanks. I actually hate taking photos, I don't have a lightbox so they all turn out gray, and then I always make them too bright when I edit Yeah, adding the big rings first just complicates it, I don't know why people do it that way. And almost all tutorials I found do it like that. Except these two: [link] and [link] , their method might be even faster, maybe I should add it to my tutorial. And thanks for the
