Description Here is a step by step guide to my fish key chain design.
Rings used are SWG standard.
It is a tutorial for intermediate maillers as it assumes some weave knowledge to accomplish.
If you are a beginner, or have questions about the weaves used in this tutorial you can visit the following sites for assistance.

This guide references the following weave.

Where can I get/buy the tutorial in a PDF.  I don't have room for a computer at my bench in order to follow a computer tutorial.

This is a delightful sculpture. I ordered SS rings in the specified sizes but I am having trouble. After adding the 7 rings to one side of the 10link HP I am unable to fit the opposite side rings into the HP. No matter how hard I try to wiggle the rings through the gaps they just won't fit. Do you have any suggestions?

I mad 4 on a string for the father in law this year and he has his catch hanging from his rear view mirror.

Very cute. It is so rare for maille artisans to post tutorials so this is a rare treat indeed.

I find that surprising. So far I have found maillers are more then thrilled to share what other artisans would call trade secrets. In fact they will beat you over the head with them.

Haha, I wish I knew the maillers you do. I've seen many that refuse to post anything on link sizes or weaves and I had one fuss me out for using a similar design to one she had copyrighted.

Oh you mean here, or perhaps Etsy?

I follow a few maillers on DA and I've seen journals from almost all of them saying to stop asking they will not post specifics. The copyright was on etsy. That one still confuses me. It was a basic byzantine cross with 4 support rings. How do you copyright something that simple?

BorealisMetalWorks In reply to lunabellvarga [2011-01-10 13:44:58 +0000 UTC]

You cannot copyright maille. At least not the weaves. That would be like someone trying to copyright knitting.
What you can do is copyright designs, and even then their design would have to be very specific, unique, and they would need to be able to prove they originated it. That is part of the function of Mailleartisans.org. To archive, share, and prevent people from claiming ownership of the craft. Legal battles have been challenged with Etsy sellers over designs they have tried to enforce copyrights on. The Scale flowers being one of them.

As an example though if you were to make a byzantine bracelet exactly like one of the colored strands I have in my gallery I wouldn't have a chance to challenge you legally. However if you were duplicate any of my sculptures I would have a very strong case. Even with offering tutorials for the sculptures doesn't give up copyrights.
However I have no issues with anyone making something from my designs, or even selling the results as long as they give credit, and don't claim to have created them.

That's what I thought. Honestly it was a product that didn't sell anyways so I wasn't going to take up a battle on a useless item. It was really strange to get a random artisan yelling at me however.

I offer a few tutoriasl and kits so people can try out our craft. I don't mind sharing at all. Others can't handle that it seems.

great tutorial will have to try this sometime..

although i did notice that you didn't mention the 2 HP you started with for the sides are a left handed and right handed version. people who don't realize there is both might not realized it from the photos so you might want to make a note, unless of course it doesn't matter and you -happen- to have it for this one, heh

BorealisMetalWorks In reply to pervyfaerie [2011-01-08 07:05:46 +0000 UTC]

I did mention on the first frame that the two long strands have to be opposite leaning.
That's why I describe it as an intermediate tutorial. A beginner won't know what HP 3-1 is let alone left, or right handed.

Yeah may have been a poor choice, I was trying to avoid explaining it in the guide. At least I know it's understandable to those I wrote it for.
