Dang so this is the biggest file ever, haha.

This is a quick (?) walkthrough of how I did the colors for the most recent page , using the first panel as an example.

I was going for a more general overview here, more of my thought process than a set of instructions of how to color like I do. Personally I don't think you should color the way I do, I take kind of a long time and anyways, everyone should develop their own style.

If you're one of those people who NEEDS TO KNOW RIGHT NOW what settings and such I use, here is a list for you:
- fill tool
- gradient tool
- default round brush
- default soft brush
- dropper tool

As of March is use Photoshop CS4, and as of last month I use a Wacom Cintiq (before that I was using an Intuos 3)/
I don't use fancy brushes or settings in Photoshop other than messing with opacity and pressure.

And my final color file for this page had these layers:
- Frame + Text
- Lines
- Soli Shading
- Soli Base Color
- Room Details (several layers flattened into one file)
- Room Shadows
- Room
- Base

Google Sketchup, a free and simple 3-D modeling program, is available here .

Hope that satisfies your curiosity

Amazing! Man I have to draw more backgrounds. Pretty much everything I draw nowadays is a character on white. Alternatively, everything I draw is in a snowstorm.

One of the best tutorials I have seen on DA. Thanks so much for showing us how you do your backgrounds, light source in a big scene, and especially for introducing Sketchup! This will be so valuable for me. Thank you!

A really nice tut, very helpfull.
Got to love layers. But tell me (and I ask, because I frequently do it since my computer barely manages Photoshop and GIMP, also I use only mouse), what do you think of pre-made backgrounds (ones you just adjust to the rest of a panel)?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

shingworks In reply to SeraphineBlackheart [2011-08-17 00:04:52 +0000 UTC]

It depends on your standards. A viewer looking at it will know that you didn't put the effort in. If you goal is to put something out for your own amusement, then it doesn't really matter, but if you're aiming to hone your skills then yeah you should try for a hand-made background.

I use a lot of layers here because I need to quickly (relatively speaking, ha) and easily duplicate the scheme in later pages. If you're doing one scene or just practicing for your own benefit, one or two layers is more than enough to create a kickass background.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SeraphineBlackheart In reply to shingworks [2011-08-17 14:50:09 +0000 UTC]

You missunderstood me (my fault, sorry). I meant pre-made backgrounds, but made by myself, only pasted later on. They're all hand made, sometimes taking few days to complete.

I mostly don't use any layers. I have old computer and work on Picture Publisher (you probably never heard of it), it doesn't work on layers, you must work just as you would do with traditional canvas (only you can paste background in).
Working on Picture Publisher require much caution (it may simply jam my windows), GIMP simply shut itself out most of the times.

Ideally, you should be making your pictures around your bg (if that makes sense). It's the difference between drawing the person first, then putting in the grand canyon behind them, or drawing the grand canyon first and then placing the person in. When you think about it, it is really weird to revolve the entire picture (including the bg) around the fg considering that the bg is... well, the entire environment. If you're making your bgs with the fg in mind, then no problem. If you're making a bunch of scenery that you're slapping behind a standing character/ characters randomly... well, it isn't against the law, but it will look like your characters are floating on a wallpaper. There isn't any way around it.

This also depends on your drawing ability. If you're comfortable with doing complex bgs then you won't have any problem either way, but if you're going to slap art behind a character then you might as well use a photo from the point of view of the principle.

Also not sure if it is an option, but maybe saving up for a new comp that can run a program with layers would be beneficial to you as an artist? I went laptop shopping with my mom recently and was really stunned by the kind of space that you can get on machines nowadays at a relatively low cost. You're asking good art questions with improvement in mind, and if you are feeling serious about your digital art, it would really help you to have the right tools Good luck!

PS. Yeah, I must admit it. If you draw a whole picture, it's whole lot esier to start with the background (I just tried that out, it's possible to draw set around figure, but it takes more time and effort).
I guess it's just like with the movie set. You may build entire decoration or use "blue room" (like I did before).
Also I found myself a CS3 lite, so it shoud put less strain on my PC than my regular CS3 (that I will un-install, I don't mind it's ripped of some functions). And, of cource, as pure blooded Mad Scientis, I will experiment with mixing programs effects.
So, thanks for your attetion. And Good luck with your art as well, may inspiration never leaves you

SeraphineBlackheart In reply to shingworks [2011-08-17 16:03:17 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, yes. But when you do close-up of a figure, you must focuse on said figure. Like in this: [link] (mixed programs, I used Photoshop for the space and highlights).
I also use second method - draw background line-art separately and figures separately, scan, paste togheter and then colour.

It is an option. I'm just doing so right now. But untill then, I'm working on my old, faightfull PC.
It's not like I can't use photoshop, only that it is very slow on my computer (did I said Picture Publisher jam my PC? I meant Photoshop, sorry). Plus, I don't have wacom tablet, I only use mouse. I must draw my line-art on a paper and scan it, and scanners are evil (always mess up my details).
As in hardware and software, I'm in it since mid '90's, so I know the subject well.
I'm just trying to improve my skills, that's why I'm asking tons of questions.

I've been trying to learn how to use synthesizers, and C++
But the tutorials for them, are nothing like the tutorials I've found on DeviantArt.

All the best ones, have told me 'why' and not 'how'
