Over the past three years I've done loads of successful commissions, and have commissioned others successfully as well. I have never had an issue with my transactions because I did my research before I started, and asked others who were doing commissions themselves how they were managing. However, not everyone has the time to go and note everyone (or, if you're getting noted, you may not have time to answer inquiries constantly)! So for your perusal and reference, here are some helpful tips to help you get started with taking commissions on DA.
This tutorial is more for people who offer commissions, but I have a few words for those who take them as well:
- Do your research. Make sure you're getting art from a reliable artist!
- Art costs money. Don't haggle down, its insulting. Don't forget, you're also getting free advertising when they post it to their gallery (for example, who here doesn't know Audley 's Castor ;3 )
- Don't be afraid to pimp the artists who did good work for you! Here is my list!
Raraarrar you know the drill, feel free to comment w/ questions if you got em, thanks for reading etc
The pics in the icons are mostly from the LJ random image generator, they're (c) to the internet, I suppose XD Except for Kash, he's (c) Geico.

That's an excellent tutorial. I've been doing some research to see how different artists do commissions, and this tutorial has just reinforced many things I've noticed (and also given some good advice), in a very clear and practical way. Very useful.

great tutorial!
i'm new to dA so this helps a lot!!
i'm just wondering, when you said that you have to charge them money and stuff, is it okay if you charge them with points?? like the points you have on dA
is that okay too??

shingworks In reply to j-n-z [2011-03-05 19:17:58 +0000 UTC]
Points are okay if you really have no other option, but honestly I think they are a waste. You can't buy anything with points except for dA stuff, so basically you are giving your money and effort to dA. Also I've seen some EXTREMELY underpriced commissions (like 10 point commissions), people don't seem to realize that points cost less than a penny. At least if you are going to do point commissions, charge a reasonable amount.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. All of my commissions have been in RL, but even then it's amazing how things can go off track. I have a commission piece presently hanging with a For Sale sign on it because the commissioner loved everything about the progression until it was time to pay, then went Missing In Action. Wish I would have asked for 1/2 up front.

Do you give them the original piece? Like ship or mail it to them?

That should be worked out between you and the commissioner beforehand.

Great tutorial, thanks for posting it. I think I already had everything pretty much covered 'by instinct' (and by talking to people who were already doing commissions), but I'm sure glad to see that I haven't been straying too much from an appropriate road.

I'm glad you mentioned the don't give them their art until AFTER they paid thing. I've had a few clients who I garnished references from and in detail drew every little bit of the sketch. I never go past the sketch without payment. But my last client didn't even note back after a month. I'm glad I didn't go farther than a sketch. <_<

Great tutorial! This is exactly how I do my commissions (except I don't put links to pictures. But now I might ^^) Although I have no paypal, and can only recieve points But I really enjoy commissions and I keep track of them and give constant updates. I think this will be really helpful to others interested in setting up their own commissions

Thank you for making this!! I'm still a bit too young to ask commissions with real money but point commissions would work just as well right? Very helpful.

Sorry if this was already answered or you are already aware of it (which is the most probable) but I think the second point is incomplete "Once you get some bites, its now time to..."
Btw, really useful, some tips I never thought about!

This is great! I'm so relieved an glad that I am doing many things that you offered in your advice. I just started giving commissions in the past few months, and I seem to be doing things right. This really takes a lot of worries off about doing things correctly (or like the pros do). ^^
