Yes it's true, new monthly tutorials are now available via my Patreon
>>>>> Get new tutorials and impress friends, children, strangers, etc with your charitable nature here <<<<<

Over the past three years I've done loads of successful commissions, and have commissioned others successfully as well. I have never had an issue with my transactions because I did my research before I started, and asked others who were doing commissions themselves how they were managing. However, not everyone has the time to go and note everyone (or, if you're getting noted, you may not have time to answer inquiries constantly)! So for your perusal and reference, here are some helpful tips to help you get started with taking commissions on DA.

This tutorial is more for people who offer commissions, but I have a few words for those who take them as well:

- Do your research. Make sure you're getting art from a reliable artist!
- Art costs money. Don't haggle down, its insulting. Don't forget, you're also getting free advertising when they post it to their gallery (for example, who here doesn't know Audley 's Castor ;3 )
- Don't be afraid to pimp the artists who did good work for you! Here is my list!

Raraarrar you know the drill, feel free to comment w/ questions if you got em, thanks for reading etc

The pics in the icons are mostly from the LJ random image generator, they're (c) to the internet, I suppose XD Except for Kash, he's (c) Geico.

how do you know when your artistic skills are worth money? <:c i kind of feel like mine are but at the same time i feel like they aren't

Take a critical look at the works of people you know who are offering their work for sale. Would you pay money for their work? If you were not you, would you pay money for your work? You should also asses if you have a base of people who will buy from you. You can be the best artist in the world, but if you don't know anyone who wants to buy your art, you won't sell it. Conversely you can be a terrible artist with a huge fanbase (there are a lot of these, sadly) and you can sell what you want at high prices because you've created a demand. So it's not as simple as "is my stuff worth money," there are a lot of factors to consider. The best way to figure it out is just to give it a try and tweak your prices/ methods from there.

Is receiving altos of requests
does mean that the person is good enough to do commissions ??

Redwolfrose In reply to 8AmyEmo8 [2013-06-17 17:13:06 +0000 UTC]

I would suggest if you want commissions at all then stop taking requests at all because its like this if you found five bucks on the ground it's free right? Would you rather work for it? Or buy it?(witch doesn't make any sense but my point still stand) requests are worth nothing and commissions are worth effort, money, love and puppys!!! Btw I'm not talking about points I'm talking real money points arnt worth shit. And yes if you work and put love in your art then it's worth money ^^

You have to declare stuff in your account, I guess? I usually transfer everything into my bank acct though so it just lumps in with that.

zepIyn In reply to Sherly97 [2012-10-14 02:36:46 +0000 UTC]

Put it in your signature that you are doing commissions, shoot your watchers a note about it (I mean, if they love your art so much, they'd want to buy it, right?). Also commissions group are a good way to advertise - join some of those!
Hope I was helpful <3.

How would you start making a commission availability thing? Like how do you actually start out and tell people that you make commissions?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zepIyn In reply to WEIRDPOPSICLETHING [2012-10-09 05:18:50 +0000 UTC]

I suggest putting it in your signature, and in your journal. Journals spread around a bit. Also, tell friends, note your watchers (if they love your art so much to watch all of it, why wouldn't they pay a small price for a lovely work?) about it. Hope I helped <3. Also join commissions groups ^^

Dead-Paranoia In reply to ??? [2012-09-18 21:17:58 +0000 UTC]

I have a paypal but I really don't use it.
so to the people want to commission me, I need to give them the name of my account to deposit the money?
and also, once i finish the drawing, do I have to give them the format of where I made it like .sai .ps ?
(sorry, I have bad english)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zepIyn In reply to Dead-Paranoia [2012-10-14 02:38:20 +0000 UTC]

You don't have to give them the original format, but I suggest posting a lower resolution (such as png) picture in your gallery, and noting the commissioner with the original format, just put a signature on it.

I did this one for a friend for free as a test. I think that for future ones I will charge from $5 to $15 depending on complexity. I think this one would be either an $8 or $10 one, what do you think?- [link]

if i want to acept points instead of cash, should i set the lowest payment at 400 points? because $5 = 400 points so won't it be normal?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zepIyn In reply to iansooknanan [2012-10-14 02:40:45 +0000 UTC]

Yes, and also link to the point to USD calculator, because some people will think it's $10 instead of $5.

Thanks for this. I've been on here for three years but never delved into the world of commissions, requests, or points..

I only just recently realized what WIP meant! Seriously, I'm one of those people who, if something seems scary or abstract or I have no idea what it is, I just stay away from it until there is an absolute need to know.. ^_^;

If i did a commission, would i have to send it if is done traditionally, and how would they pay me?

👍: 0 ⏩: 3

Cafe-Breva In reply to PEACHROS3 [2012-08-23 18:48:18 +0000 UTC]

You don't have to send them the original unless you specified to them that you do in fact, give it to them. If I do traditional commissions, I tend to charge more if they would like the original sent to them, because I like to keep them if I can! xD When writing your commission info for traditional pieces, I would specify your policy about original work in it. So basically, whether you are sending it or not, make sure to let them know. It's a lot easier to have complications if you leave information out because you think it should be understood.
They would pay you the same way they normally do, but when sending them the original, it is easiest to use paypal, because then you don't have to take money out of your own pocket to pay for shipping >.<; ; ;
I hope this helps a little! :3
