Oh damn, oh shit
Its tutorial time 8D Cuz I have nothing else on my plate, obviously (I'm lying). Anyways I was feeling like not working on comics so I did this. As always, feel free to trace or whatever you need to do. Sorry if it is less in depth, this is more about the shapes and how to arrange them on the face vs an exhaustive listing of a bunch of details. Hopefully this will give you a place to begin so you can make your own variety, instead of having to rely on others and reffing (if you even need the help).
I'd like to add, this is exactly how I draw faces. If you like that and want to emulate it for some godawful reason, go ahead, I guess (though I strongly advise you to develop your own style). But hopefully the principles are basic enough to be applied to any style you like.

I'm going to be teaching a quick drawing lesson to beginning artists, and this is extremely helpful in terms of how to explain the basics without getting too deep into anatomy. Thanks so much!

I often have trouble turning an original character--or any face--left or right, up or down, and making it consistent with the front view I've done: profile, 3/4, you name it.
I've noticed anime and manga seems to be so...cookie cutter. The face shapes look all the same generally. I love the movie The Lorax, but everyone seems to LOOK alike.

Learn how to break the face into simple shapes. Try drawing, for example, a head made entirely of cubes (one big cube, two rectangular cubes, cube with cube for nose, etc). You'll find it is EXTREMELY easy to find out where the midpoints of things are that way, and extremely easy to put them into perspective. Try it again for spheres, which are slightly more difficult, but you'll understand space a lot better for having worked with cubes. Real heads have a lot of geometry to them but if you understand the basic shapes you can draw them in almost every pose without any problems.

I really enjoy you're attitude towards Japanese anime, (it sucks; I agree.) There really is never any originality to it, atleast, not in anything I've witnessed.
You're good at explaining, though. You make things quick and simple without leaving out details. Well done.

I agree, there's a lot of time-wasting, suckish animes out there, but there's the rare gems here and there.
Try watching Hayao Miyazaki's movies. They're kinda good. (Story-wise, yeah. ) And not all animes have that (super mega) giant eyes and physics-defying hair. (Though those sorts seem to be more common. Sigh.) There /are/ some good ones, you just need to look for them.

That is true. I've seen select animes that aren't half bad, really... But the standard Japanese anime style is so overused and I feel it became quite unoriginal some time ago. Everywhere you look, its there. Not that I completely mind it; some of it I find absolutley adorable. Though, I just see it so very often to the point where I can't help but wonder if there is anyone out there trying somthing different for a change.

The only anime I've ever loved--seen very little of it--is ROBOTECH. I was even tempted to buy the originals in Japanese lol.
