Oh damn, oh shit

Its tutorial time 8D Cuz I have nothing else on my plate, obviously (I'm lying). Anyways I was feeling like not working on comics so I did this. As always, feel free to trace or whatever you need to do. Sorry if it is less in depth, this is more about the shapes and how to arrange them on the face vs an exhaustive listing of a bunch of details. Hopefully this will give you a place to begin so you can make your own variety, instead of having to rely on others and reffing (if you even need the help).

I'd like to add, this is exactly how I draw faces. If you like that and want to emulate it for some godawful reason, go ahead, I guess (though I strongly advise you to develop your own style). But hopefully the principles are basic enough to be applied to any style you like.

*edit* Oop, almost forgot! my fav nose tutorial, by mimm :mimm.deviantart.com/art/Nose-d…

thank you so much! even though my style is no where close to western, this still gives me alot of inspiration for a fusion style that i am working on. Again, thanks!

Aw, how did I miss this? >_<

Clever, enlightening, and entertaining all at once . Have I ever mentioned how awesome these are? XD Anyway, this was a good supplement to my figure drawing class -- particularly the bit about recognizing the internal structure. Also, just very helpful all-around .

Aw, thanks <3 Yeah that internal structure thing is so important ;____; I don't know how I didn't pick up on it for all these years, but better late than never D;

Very cool- I like your style because it's so clean and varied. Every one of your characters looks different, and yet still believable. Plus, I love these tutorials because they actually cover several different variations of noses and mouths and stuff, instead of just one kind. Plus, your style isn't straight anime- it's somewhere between realism and cartoon.

Well done, yet again. I'm favoriting this so I can come back and look at it. ^^

Thanks so much! I enjoy having a more flexible style, it lets me do more with it than just a straight-up anime or american style

Alright, I must ask. How do you draw your little circles so well? For the life of me I can't make a continuous circle. What's the secret?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

shingworks In reply to lcarsos [2009-02-04 05:45:23 +0000 UTC]

uh, practice? XD I don't really think about it, they just happen. If I don't like one I'll try another etc etc until it looks right! Also if you work smaller your circles will tend to be better.

ah, you did beautifully, thank you.
I'm not very happy with you grouping all anime styles together, because quite a bit of it IS anatomically correct. Kind of like stereotyping it, no? haha, sorry, sorry, I won't judge.

Thank you for the tutorial, it was very informational, if a bit... uh... harsh, but I like how you put in anatomy. Anatomy saved my butt when it came to learning about hands, so I'm quite fond of it, really. XD

Cangrejo-Volador In reply to ??? [2009-01-24 22:39:00 +0000 UTC]

Nice tutorial as always, clear and to the point. One suggestion tho, it could help to mention that all the parts of the face, nose, eyes, mouth, brows, all work as a unit, and if one moves it affects the rest, as it is in the tutorial you treated each separately, just saying it would be ncie to show some examples of the face working as a unit rather than separate parts.

cool stuff!

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

shingworks In reply to Cangrejo-Volador [2009-01-25 07:08:46 +0000 UTC]

I go more into expressions in my expression tutorial I can see your point, but in practice I don't usually have the facial features acting together? Like one raised eyebrow would probably raise the other a bit irl but in my drawings I push for a more cartoony look so each unit remains separate. Thats just me though... anyways, thanks for the thought!

I much prefer this to an in depth face study as it gives good advice and suggestions and allows the reader freedom to use it in a way that works for them.

As your tutorials often do. They're my favorite tutorials.
