Oh damn, oh shit
Its tutorial time 8D Cuz I have nothing else on my plate, obviously (I'm lying). Anyways I was feeling like not working on comics so I did this. As always, feel free to trace or whatever you need to do. Sorry if it is less in depth, this is more about the shapes and how to arrange them on the face vs an exhaustive listing of a bunch of details. Hopefully this will give you a place to begin so you can make your own variety, instead of having to rely on others and reffing (if you even need the help).
I'd like to add, this is exactly how I draw faces. If you like that and want to emulate it for some godawful reason, go ahead, I guess (though I strongly advise you to develop your own style). But hopefully the principles are basic enough to be applied to any style you like.

this is a wonderful tutorial in that it points out no matter how awesomely awesome you are, if the composition isn't right, the picture won't be. kudos!
i personally start with an egg shape with the guide lines, but mostly just so i can get the chins right.
i would however, like to point out that calling anime the "easy way out" and that it uses an "ugly shovel shape (with no variations)" was so out of place with the rest of the helpful tips, that it seemed even more nasty than it would have been to begin with.
i am a manga artist, and i KNOW i don't draw the same face shape for every person. other people notice it too, so i'm pretty sure i'm not just tooting my own horn for the sake of it
my point is, the fact that i took interest in this almost inevitably means other anime/manga artists, some probably younger than i am, also took interest, and you just (perhaps without realizing) called their passion crap. i don't really care if you like anime or not--i have friends who don't, and it doesn't bother me. but be gentler with your opinions, since they might be trying to learn real stuff that could help them a lot from this.
sorry for the long comment

Thanks! I'm glad you liked the technical aspects of the tutorial.
As for the other part, I've had people make similar comments about my little remarks on my other tutorials as well. While I agree that a lot of people have passions in things that I don't necessarily care for, I also don't think that I should have to hold back on what I think just because it might not appeal to someone else. I come from a very heavy manga/ anime background, and can say for a fact that it was the most damaging thing to happen to my style. If I could go back in time and pretend I had never seen any of it, I would, just to spare the years it took me to rediscover proper anatomy and proportion. I am still annoyed at the style because so many people think it is fun and easy, without realizing that it is VERY abbreviated. I also mention at the bottom of the tut that one can go ahead and do whatever they like, after they learn the rules of drawing/ anatomy...
In any case, thanks for your opinion! I'm not invalidating it at all, just stating where I'm coming from. I'm glad you could talk about it in a mature way.

yey! another one that agrees with me XD
my prof really hates anime /manga style... she's right though... coz it really does make you stick to one style... and hard to change it

i'm glad you could reply in a mature way! i was so worried i'd get a nasty reply about how anime is the sin of all sins and i should go die...=_=
damaging? really? i try to keep with proper anatomy as much as possible in my art. i don't even do particularly large eyes (though i sometimes seem to draw them a little too far apart--i work on that as much as possible so i don't make it a habit)
as for people thinking it's fun and easy, i can only agree with the first part. easy? oh god, don't get me started...but that's where the anatomy comes in; it's harder than it appears.
i guess i can see why someone would think it damaging stylistically, although if it means anything to you, i see almost no traces of it in what i saw of the tutorial (minus the top picture, but i assume that was on purpose )
your style actually reminds me a little of Disney mixed with Danny Phantom? (if you find that insulting, my deepest apologies-it wasn't meant to be!)
thanks for the reply, and seriously, i admire the shapes and contours of your stuff! it's fun to look at, and far as i'm concerned, better as far as odd angles than i could hope to be in the next year.

shingworks In reply to Terranian-boy [2009-01-23 00:40:55 +0000 UTC]
Haha, thanks XD Yeah everyone tells me my style looks like something (usually its Avatar), though I've had it for about 4 or 5 years now.
In terms of anatomy, I see all the time where people will just slap down the major features- eyes, nose, mouth, spike hair- and call it a day. That is exactly what I used to do, even up to a few months ago. Its ridiculous... its so easy to see if you point it out that there is an underlying structure, but with anime the features are so compact/ obvious that you feel like you can't mess up. Seriously, there is only so much space on the face to fit those giant eyes XD So it will look good for all the wrong reasons. Some of my better work is just because I got lucky, not because I was paying attention.
Again, I really think it comes down to knowledge... if you can draw a normal human body in a realistic style, without reference, then you win. You can plot your next point wherever you like since you've already grounded yourself at the center. But for those who start off in left field like myself it takes a lot of work to crawl back to the beginning since you sort of form an "artistic" opinion of yourself, like "oh well this is my STYLE so of course it must be okay."
Haha, sorry for the rant XD I think if you feel like you know what you're doing and you honestly can say that you can draw as realistically as you can draw stylized, then there is nothing to worry about. But if you are at point B without having done point A it is good to be honest about that too, even if it hurts a little Or a lot, in my case, haha.
Thanks again XD

oh, you're welcome! yeah, i actually did start with anime, but it was in the first grade, and mostly copied stuff that was out of proportion to the point where the head took up the whole page. (i.e., BAD)
i took figure drawing lessons all through the latter half of elementary school, and on up through middle school, so i think (hope) i'm ok.
and again, thank YOU so much for being mature enough to hold an intelligent and civilized conversation about it.

Lovely tutorial, but, and yeah, there's always a but: I tried, tried, tried, and then I tried some more to make that circle-line-thing work - it just isn't. I can see the fanciness, and how much easier fitting everything in that shovel could be... But my conclusion is still that I can't do it~
I hope this was helpful to somebody else though. c:

While I was reading this tutorial I was a little depressed when I found out how uniform my character's faces were. So I sat down and started to play with my three main characters face- and holy shit, I can't believe the results.
Their faces actually differ now, and the unique-ness makes them so much more human! I also have two identical twin characters and I had the fun challenge of finding just the right face shape that suit them both. Then I got to their usual accessories and I found out how hair and mannerisms can truely differ two characters from one another-- and yet, they still looked like twins. Fun!
Anyway, thank you so much! It's crazy how you can actually *gasp* learn from art!
( btw the anime bashing made me lawl. a lot. )
