Oh damn, oh shit
Its tutorial time 8D Cuz I have nothing else on my plate, obviously (I'm lying). Anyways I was feeling like not working on comics so I did this. As always, feel free to trace or whatever you need to do. Sorry if it is less in depth, this is more about the shapes and how to arrange them on the face vs an exhaustive listing of a bunch of details. Hopefully this will give you a place to begin so you can make your own variety, instead of having to rely on others and reffing (if you even need the help).
I'd like to add, this is exactly how I draw faces. If you like that and want to emulate it for some godawful reason, go ahead, I guess (though I strongly advise you to develop your own style). But hopefully the principles are basic enough to be applied to any style you like.

Glad you liked it! Usually I can get one done in a night, starting around 8 and working till 4 or 5. So, 8 hours? I could post them pretty often if I wanted, but I like doing other stuff in between so I space it out to one tut every 2 or 3 months...

You always manage to post a tutorial just after I've yelled a lot, thrown my sketchbook across the room, and given up. And your tutorials are always awesome. You take a lot of very basic knowledge ("There's a skull INSIDE the head") and then apply it and explain it so that it sticks. I personally have a lot of problem with getting faces to look balanced, but in reading through this I've noticed some guidelines that I don't use but probably *should*...
Thank you again for another tutorial

One thing i never understood about drawing, if you make those face lines to set out the proportions. But then those lines are gone in the next step?. Im guessing you just erase them? but then dont you have smudge marks all over your work?
š: 0 ā©: 2
AironShiroi In reply to Marsh0 [2009-01-19 22:09:03 +0000 UTC]
Just popping in to answer this
Yeah, you do erase them and the trick to not getting smudge marks is to sketch the proportion lines out very lightly with your pencil that way the graphite doesn't cling to the paper. I'd suggest looking at what kind of eraser you're using too, the kneaded erasers are best in my opinion

shingworks In reply to Marsh0 [2009-01-19 22:06:34 +0000 UTC]
I used to get annoyed about that as well. Now I either do everything digitally on the computer, or I use a colored pencil... with colored pencil you can draw the lines all you want and then go over the ones you like with a regular pencil. When you scan it into the computer you can remove the colored pencil with a photo editing software like photoshop. Or if you want to be more technical you can just use tracing paper or trace over your lines using a window or a lightbox. Or easiest, sketch in pencil and ink in pen so your lines can be erased! There are a lot of options, but they all take a little bit of work...

I don't draw pupils at all, so removing irises and still making it clear what is the person looking at... Tricky
Nice tutorial, you've covered all the basics and more without forcing your style on the readers.
š: 0 ā©: 1
shingworks In reply to SmaggTheSmug [2009-01-19 22:12:06 +0000 UTC]
XD Yeah that is a bit tricky, but in general the bigger your irises the more focused they will be by default. Its hard to miss when the iris takes up like half of the whites XD
