Oh damn, oh shit

Its tutorial time 8D Cuz I have nothing else on my plate, obviously (I'm lying). Anyways I was feeling like not working on comics so I did this. As always, feel free to trace or whatever you need to do. Sorry if it is less in depth, this is more about the shapes and how to arrange them on the face vs an exhaustive listing of a bunch of details. Hopefully this will give you a place to begin so you can make your own variety, instead of having to rely on others and reffing (if you even need the help).

I'd like to add, this is exactly how I draw faces. If you like that and want to emulate it for some godawful reason, go ahead, I guess (though I strongly advise you to develop your own style). But hopefully the principles are basic enough to be applied to any style you like.

*edit* Oop, almost forgot! my fav nose tutorial, by mimm :mimm.deviantart.com/art/Nose-d…

Alexds1, you've done it again.

So far, I've seen that your tutorials have been the most useful on dA. The design is simple and easy to the eyes, and your approach is optimistic and makes me feel enthusiastic about learning. I love love love your tutorials. :'D

I WOULD NEVER DRAW A FACE WRONG. I MEAN... IT'S JUST MY STYLE... IT'S NOT WRONG. YEAH.
lol wut

I always have that 'mouth too close to the side of the face' problem... and just the overall misplacement of the mouth... as well as a variety of other things, I'm sure. D= *Wan, wan, waaaann* But this is yet another awesome tutorial that has some really great points that many of us should beat into our heads and remember more often. X_X

lol my style ;___; Thats my favorite excuse, like having eyes floating around is a stylistic preference.

Yeah, I have the same exact mouth problem. I also tend to make my smiles go up past the nose, which looks awesome but uh yeah the skull doesn't work that way :C I'm finding ways to work within the confines of believability though, it just takes a bit of wrangling.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

OutcastSpace In reply to shingworks [2009-01-19 22:31:56 +0000 UTC]

Eyes floating around? XD

Yeah, but I guess there's also the fact that they're cartoons and that gives a slight excuse to exaggerate things that may not be believable otherwise. If you didn't then we'd just be drawing realism. Still, I'm assuming what you're getting at is that having SOME sort of solid skeletal system down for a character helps with consistency from image to image.
Now I've got myself wondering if Mickey Mouse even has a jaw with the way his lip hangs down. D=

I'm surprised but I even can take this for my style and within some moments and some adjusted to my own way it helps a lot

THANK YOU!

Your tutorials are teh awesomest. (Yeah I think anime is shitty chara design wise too - I tried to tell my best friend that that was why N.A. animators disdain it and she didn't believe me.) Thanks for making this, 'cus making faces with different proportion (even though I use structure like this already) makes my head hurt and I don't want my designs to all look the same and be shitty like anime. >< My next character design project is a big tough brawny sorta middle-aged guy and I usually draw scrawny people who are like me, so thank you, 'cus the head is probably the part of the body that screws me up the worst when it comes to drawing different body types. Always love your tutorials!! Thanks again!!

shingworks In reply to Falcolf [2009-01-19 22:18:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for reading! Once you start varying heads and body shapes and such its hard to stop A good way to do "research" is watch a lot of cartoons and see how they portray different body types... good luck on your designs

My shitty anime will be improved because of this. Thank you.

No seriously, it will.

I remember, I read a manga once. Story was good but all the faces looked the same! Especially the male characters! So I had a really hard time telling who was who. Even anime and manga artists should take the time to really try and make each face different.

And personally, I think your tutorials are great. Normally I can't even understand the ones made for brain dead monkeys, but I understand yours! And that is AWESOME.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

shingworks In reply to Reily96 [2009-01-19 22:20:21 +0000 UTC]

Yay! I'm glad you found it understandable! And yeah, I have a hell of a time telling anime characters apart, in b/w manga it can be impossible XC

but great tutorial!

Great tut, as usual. You either like to help people A LOT (you've made like 7 of these already) or you are a horrible procrastinator. I'm thinking it might be both.
The neck on the back view of the head seems a little thin.

Also, I am starting to wonder about/fear for your chinchilla.

shingworks In reply to CarpeVita [2009-01-19 22:22:41 +0000 UTC]

It is definitely both v__v I'm actually messing with using comics/ tutorials as a teaching device, maybe if I go for my masters I can expand more on this kind of method except for like, bio or something.

Hm, yeah a bit thin! They should work out XD

CarpeVita In reply to shingworks [2009-01-20 00:29:06 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm sure they'd work great, if you keep them funny/interesting (gotta keep those kids entertained)! I could see it working great for like plant anatomy and stuff (dicot vs monocot comes to mind first).

shingworks In reply to CarpeVita [2009-01-20 01:19:43 +0000 UTC]

Haha, hopefully! I draw comics to myself all the time when studying, esp for stupid shit like immunology which is so aggravating if you don't have a good visual idea of whats going on...

bluberrybunny In reply to ??? [2009-01-19 05:30:25 +0000 UTC]

hahaha "shitty anime"
I totally agree, some anime characters look everybody's oc but change the hair and clothing. I thought I was the only one that notice that.

by the way awesome tutorial.

It's totally a huge help. I still struggle with things like eyes and mouths at times, and this is an excellent guide.

Have you ever thought about a simple basic guide to drawing in a digital program like Photoshop?
