Oh damn, oh shit

Its tutorial time 8D Cuz I have nothing else on my plate, obviously (I'm lying). Anyways I was feeling like not working on comics so I did this. As always, feel free to trace or whatever you need to do. Sorry if it is less in depth, this is more about the shapes and how to arrange them on the face vs an exhaustive listing of a bunch of details. Hopefully this will give you a place to begin so you can make your own variety, instead of having to rely on others and reffing (if you even need the help).

I'd like to add, this is exactly how I draw faces. If you like that and want to emulate it for some godawful reason, go ahead, I guess (though I strongly advise you to develop your own style). But hopefully the principles are basic enough to be applied to any style you like.

*edit* Oop, almost forgot! my fav nose tutorial, by mimm :mimm.deviantart.com/art/Nose-d…

What kid of tutorial? Like how to get line variation with a tablet or stuff like that? hotkeys? That seems like a good idea...

those would be useful. I've found I have a hard time getting good smooth lines.

hotkeys would be awesome!

Your tutorials are so amazing. *o*
My next drawing, I'm going to ref. back to this, and probably your other tutorials because of how lifeless the stuff I draw is.

Ha ha, anime-hater field day.

Thanks for the tutorial. Variation in facial structure is doggone scary at times.

It can be a bit scary :3 Just like anything else, needs so practice to get right...

Kids these days and their photoshop...when I was your age, I used a MIRROR to do the flip test.

Ah great tutorial as usual.

lol, uh. Yeah, maybe I should have mentioned that... or the tried and true "hold it to the light and draw through the paper backwards" method.

tesseninthesand In reply to shingworks [2009-01-20 01:54:55 +0000 UTC]

Well I mean you shouldn't HAVE to mention it. It should be common sense but KIDS THESE DAYS. a

Nice! I love these tutorials. This was especially helpful because of the nose section- I suck at 'em. Next time I doodle, I'll try to add more variation to my faces and noses.

ChocolateCherii In reply to ??? [2009-01-19 02:56:23 +0000 UTC]

Great tutorial. Anime style is common because some artists just start off without a better inspiration. I started off with it (bad bad me D: *slap*) and so I'm referring to a lot of anatomy books and tutorials to pull myself off the style and into my own style.
Anime style is shitty when its not drawn for animation, what its meant for. XD

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

shingworks In reply to ChocolateCherii [2009-01-19 22:28:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I started drawing just like that too :C It took me years to correct all the horrible mistakes...

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

ChocolateCherii In reply to shingworks [2009-01-22 02:15:42 +0000 UTC]

I hope it only takes me that long, too. I don't draw characters much outside of my cartoon drawings that are scattered throughout my vast collection of class notes. ._.

I have to disagree with the strictness on the mouth. The jaw and the muscles formed on it are very versatile.

But good stuff here! Your layout for these is so nice.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

shingworks In reply to defineprog [2009-01-19 22:29:46 +0000 UTC]

Oh well yeah, they can do quite a bit! I was more saying to make sure that the mouth connects to the throat at some point, since people tend to slap down a mouth wherever they like without thinking where the teeth and such are wandering off to.

I always learn valuable lessons when I check out your tutorials x3

I think you should make these into a "How To" book, because I would most definitely add it to my library <3 (Well...if I had a library. It would probably just end up on my bookshelf...but that doesn't sound as fancy.)

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

shingworks In reply to kkitty23 [2009-01-19 02:31:45 +0000 UTC]

Thank you XD Several people have said that about a book, which is nice... I am thinking about making one when I have more material. Maybe some cheap Lulu thing so people can draw on it and not feel bad XD

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

shingworks In reply to paflion [2009-01-19 02:27:44 +0000 UTC]

Shoopchilla XD And yes, I have a great tip for jaw perspective, go look at *vert-is-ninja 's work, she does the best jaws of anyone I know and they are angular and easy to break down if you look hard enough

I will continue to favorite your tutorials, mainly because you discuss such things as the nose in a completely understandable way. No matter how many times I go to anatomy workshops I'll nod and smile and think I understand... when really I'm just whistlin' dixie.

Thanks for this!
