Another tutorial Theres a lot of text but I tried to make my system as clear as possible. As usual you can copy or use any of these drawings freely, but be sure to read the tut as well! As I recommend in it to ref from photos or real life over other people who might have made mistakes (not me of course, as I never make mistakes) (lol). Enjoy!

Nothing i can really say about this that hasn't been said already. Well done on making a very concise and informative tutorial, and thankyou very much for doing so, you've no doubt helped many people with drawing this very troublesome appendage.

Very good tutorial.
I strongly recommend this who have trouble drawing hands.
Well, it's very hard to draw hand poses. Even pros need some sort of reference just to get it right.

Agreed I'm always referencing my own hands to make sure that I'm not making a mistake!

Hands are not very hard to draw.
Hand gestures are very tough to draw, so it may be necessary to have people model for you haha...

I was just reading this, it's a good tutorial, and I thought as I was going through it that there would be a picture of the hand flipping the reader off, I don't know why, but I did.

1. Do you actually hold the pencil like the drawing hand you drew?
2. The "melted together" anime fingers are actually harder to do than I thought. I would in no way call them a cop-out, you still need to know hand anatomy to make that work. Heck, I'd rather draw individual fingers anytime, it's easier for me.
For Christ's sake, I ended up defending anime. What is this world coming to??
Anyway, great tutorial I'm not quite as scared of drawing hands as younger artists are, but I can always use new tips and tricks. I sure learned something today.

I have to agree with you on one thing: references rock! No matter how good you think you can draw from your mind, a 12-year-old looking at a photograph will do it better. I drew my hand incredibly realistic when I was 12, but even as a High School Junior, I can't do crap without a reference. Good artists draw from observation, it's not a sign of weakness!

So do you draw the green frame first or how do you begin?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
shingworks In reply to ShuiYue [2010-03-23 16:17:44 +0000 UTC]
The green stuff is the sketch part. You'll end up with the finished product eventually but you need to do the undersketch first!

ShuiYue In reply to shingworks [2010-03-26 19:29:38 +0000 UTC]
I think that is the skill that needs to be practiced. I just want to skip over it right to the finished thing, never works though...
