Depends on the artist. I learned from looking at both the real deal and from looking at simplified drawings, like the ones shown here. I recommend heavily at the bottom to reference photos and other primary source sort of materials... however, for the beginner sometimes it's helpful to see a cartoon of the object before delving into the small parts like bones and musculature. But of course, to each their own.
And yes I do scorn anime "artists", since I think the vast majority of them don't care to reference. Unfortunately you see it sometimes in professional art too. This is my opinion, and if you want to disagree thats fine.

Well, I wouldn't nescesarilly scorn anime artists ('Cuz I'm trying to learn that style, and a lot of the anatomy is real and referenced...), but I do agree with you on the referencing part...A lot of times, I'll try and use my own hand as a reference, since I'll always have them. And I do love you draw. Very much. Just saying.

*shrugs* Pretty much. I remember when I first started drawing, I knew nothing about anatomy...Compared to now, my art pretty much sucked...Even though I did have some pretty cute ideas back then.

*shock* Looking at that picture...some people have pointer and ring fingers that are almost exactly the same length!? My pointer finger is about a quarter to half inch shorter than my ring finger. Is that strange?

Hee hee. I know...I know things vary...but for some reason with regards to hands I had somehow come under the delusion that my hands functioned as a decent universal base--from which others might vary largely only in terms of shape and width but not so much length. >_<;

Oh god. This made me laugh so hardcore HARD. The "I was ham" had me going for at least 15 minutes AT LEAST. And I don't even draw! though I do crappily sculpt

I love old man hands ;_____; Basically when you draw a hand make sure the knuckles are larger/ stick out more, add spots and also veins on top of the tendons running down from the knuckles. If you're adding color, make the colors mottled instead of smooth.
