21. Vacation

"Did you ever consider having a vacation at home?"

Danny furrowed his brow, looking totally baffled by the question Valerie just asked him. The thought had honestly never occurred to him until right then. He shook his head after a moment and shrugged. "You know how I need an honest break from ghost fighting these days. Besides, I know you like to beat the crap out of some of those ghosts once in a while. Am I right?"

The Huntress rolled her eyes at this teasing jab, unable to suppress the smile on her face. She didn't want to admit he was right. Not to his face anyway. "Still. You know there are things called movies and World of Warcraft and stuff. And you could try and ignore the ghosts once in a while."

He didn't move from his position on the edge of the roof. "There's something called a 'hero complex' getting in the way of that."

"Fair enough," she agreed.

The ghost teen looked tired, rubbing his head with his hands and moaning softly. Valerie sat next to him and tilted her head a bit. A hand went on his shoulder, and he winced a little as if she was going to hit him. He still wasn't used to them being uneasy allies. Especially after what happened those years back… "The next time you take a vacation, I'm coming along with you. No exceptions."

He looked almost horrified at the prospect, but Valerie shushed him with a hard look. "As friends, Fenton. I know full and well what Manson's capable of, and I don't intend on messing up your relationship with her, if you catch my drift. Besides— didn't you ever think I needed one too? If all else fails, your parents can take care of them. I'm pretty damn sure they wouldn't mind."

Danny blinked. Valerie looked utterly serious.

"…you are a genius at times."

She chuckled a little at this statement. "More so now than a couple of years ago, huh?"

"I'm going to totally pretend I didn't hear that."
