Description
Picture of my oc Shinrei being awesome. I have had a hankerin' to draw some actual martial arts pieces since I have not been able to get to Kendo practice for a month and I get a little stir crazy when I can't move my body a bit. I also needed some stress relief because of all the stuff going on right now, and drawing helps.I actually used to practice Wing Chun Kung Fu. Did that for about five years until I could no longer afford to travel the two hours to get there (I was only in my teens at the time, and didn't have a great job...not that I do now either >.>) Doing that exposed me to other forms of Chinese martial arts, which I still think are some of the most beautiful and powerful in the world. Of the over 1,000 different forms of martial arts in China, Shaolin is the most well-known, probably.
There are a variety of characteristics one must develop in Shaolin Kung Fu, and one of them I became very fixated on was to "Step like a dragon," which means to have conviction in each step, because one's rooting and movement ultimately transfer power into one's fists.
And so I started doodling and decided to try drawing some basic movements and hand forms from traditional kung fu, most notably this stance which is used in various forms of Dragon Style Kung Fu. It's actually quite difficult to get used to, as you have to have very strong legs, but the stance (combined with the other movements in the form) speaks utterly of power and aggression. I chose Shinrei for this simply because she is the most fun for me to draw.

Thanks so much! Β I'm very glad you like it!
Yeah, I really wanted to make it look as though she's been practicing hard for a few hours or something.

Thank you very much for saying so!
Yeah, I tried to be a little more realistic with the definition; usually the women I draw have less of it.
I like your piece "Bashful Nene!"

Okay, so how looks kanji in "Kira" write as "ki- happiness, success or congratulation" and "ra- good, enderganding, gifted"?
It's my OC's name but I'm not sure how these kanji looks like

shinsengumi77 In reply to Oljum [2011-12-02 09:43:55 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm...I might actually have to look into this a bit more thoroughly. "kira" won't be too hard to find kanji for as is, but if you have those specific meanings attached I will have to look deeper. The words that come to mind when I hear "ki" are wood, energy, nature, atmosphere, spirit, and danger, among others (but there are a lot of meanings so I'll check more) and for 'ra" there is comfort, next, limit, and many others. The issue is that many of those readings require furigana -other characters that aren't kanji that Japanese people use to pronounce the words -but they are not used in names. I can make a list of possible kanji combinations for his name if you want, and you can choose the ones you like best. Does that sound ok? I can also look for kanji for his last name if you want.

I will do what I can, but you can try this site: [link]
or download a program called wakan: [link] to try to search through things yourself. To be safe, if you find something you like send me a message so I can confirm it for you (each kanji is read in two ways, and has many meanings and ways to write it, so I want to make sure you have the right ones.)

It's bringing very energetic feels. As because of colors, pose and effects of the overview. Good to see ever Shinrei can became tired
Yes, I had read your note, but looking at Shinrei I'm thinking "is she practice martial arts or some break dancing" Propably it's because of her clothes- they dosen't look like for martial arts. But I don't see it as wrong. For me it's make it looks more... hmm... natural

shinsengumi77 In reply to Oljum [2011-12-02 09:16:22 +0000 UTC]
ha ha She's not tired at all. Because of a special organ in their bodies, they can put out massive amounts of energy over long periods of time. (Hiro once did a test in which he had to run constantly for as long as possible -He ran for two weeks straight with no food or water and showed no signs of letting up, so the military stopped the test.) A light sheen of sweat is actually a very good thing to have when practicing.
This is a stance in dragon style kung fu. Traditional Chinese martial arts have a variety of interesting postures and attack angles in them, so to anyone unfamiliar with them it may look odd.
The clothes are just a simple cotton gi top and pants, used in many types of martial arts practice. They do look kind of like street clothes though.

Now after I think a little more about what yur had written about Hiro's record and sweating- he couldn't make it whithout drinking. And people couldn't make any sport practicing without sweat, because skin protects body from became too hot. If sweat is mostly make from water and Hiro sweat after some time, he wouldn't have any water for sweating. so he must drink anything

Actually no, that's what's so special about that organ I mentioned earlier. Hiro, Shinrei, and the main bad guy all have this organ that generates energy and matter (it's important and strange, because one of the properties of matter is that it cannot be created or destroyed, only changed.) In other words, his body can produce the Hydrogen and Oxygen atoms needed to make water on his own. This is why he had the ability to continue for so long, and it was after this that they discovered the organ responsible for allowing it.

lol It is kinda creepy I guess. It just means they don't get tired easily. And the sweat thing is important, because if you don't sweat a little, you can get overheated and pass out.

Now this has to be my favorite pic of Shinrei thus far. The pose and coloring really stands out. I've learned something new about Shinrei with this piece.
Very cool, have you ever thought of taking Wing Chun again? What is the ranking, belt system like in Wing Chun if I may ask? I'm only familiar with the systems of Japan and Korea (I studied Hapkido). The Chinese martial arts are amazing and as you know the genisis of so many other world arts. I wish there were classes of any Kung Fu styles in my area.
π: 0 β©: 1
shinsengumi77 In reply to LavenderBlade [2011-11-30 18:26:12 +0000 UTC]
I'm glad you like it! The rank system is a progression of colored sashes. I only tested once and got the first sash (there was no real reason to test in my opinion, because there weren't really competitions with rank brackets.) There are many more ranks in kung fu (at least in my old school) than in Japanese and Korean systems, and the highest rank was a gold sash, but typically people stop at a red sash with red trim.) You took hapkido? I really enjoyed it while it lasted...there was actually a class for it in college, and I took two sections of it. I find it much more effective than TaeKwwonDo.
I would love to get back into unarmed systems, but having done my research, I would probably take another art, mostly because it takes a little longer to become proficient in Kung Fu than in other arts (although Wing Chun is supposed to be simple enough to master within a year or two -ha ha not the case with me!) If I do decide to go back to it, my brother actually reached the highest rank under Sifu at my school, so he could probably train with me again. He used to give me supplementary training (which just about killed me ) I wouldn't mind getting to the butterfly swords and eight-diagram pole...

LavenderBlade In reply to shinsengumi77 [2011-12-01 02:22:15 +0000 UTC]
Very cool. Yes I studied Hapkido for about two years when I was in high school. I wish I would have continued my studies but the classes were pricey and I was only about seventeen-years-old and had to work and pay for a car. LOL, now I only draw characters that practice the arts.
I would love to learn to use weapons such as the Butterfly swords and Eight-diagram-staffs. The Chinese arts have some of the coolest weapons. What other arts have you studied if I may ask?
