Description
This is the first of maybe 2 or more versions I'll make of this cloud setting with the knight on the Braculor facing the dreaded black knight in a duel. This actually started out as a background for my first Dev ID image. I liked the clouds so much that I wanted to turn it into a real piece of art.
Painted over 2 evenings, the original is way larger and might be suitable for large prints if I decide to make a poster out of it.
Ask for permission before using this image for any reason.
Painted in 3 layers, PS6 and a tablet

oh! That's very beautiful. Sky and clouds have perfect light.
I can't avoid thinking in Witch king, (lotr) but of course, this ones looks
less terrorific. -yip- but they are great.
I have to admit that I like a lot details in their wings. Its little veins in the light looks very well.
And I can't believe you only use 3 layers... I think you use more, something like 7...
hehehe.
+fav.

Thanks for the fav and nice comment

For this type of clouds I started out by using a very large round edged hard brush. I blocked out the main shape of the clouds and went on using smaller and smaller brush sizes. To add to the soft feeling I also used soft edged round brushes. Then the next thing was to decide the strenght, color and direction of the light and use the multiply and color tool for that. Alot of smudging in the right places and the proper use ( do not overuse) of the dodge tool makes the light really shine and sparkle where you want it to.
This is one of many tricks You can use to create believeable cloud settings
I hope that was to some help, the main thing is: never be too afraid to experiment with you picture, avoid going in and do the details and try to picture the image in your mind what it will look like in the end as You go along creating Your masterpiece

Nice.

I've made only one tutorial so far, haven't had time to make more yet...and it's in Norwegian only. I could do a tutorial on how to make realistic and fantasy clouds...I'll see what I can do between working on the script of my fantasy comic and the fantasy card game

Thanks! Well...they're not exactly dragons of any known form as their wings are much longer and they've got no mouth as they feed on energy sources. And as You can see they have no feet either. I've named these flying creatures: Braculor

Ah true, that's a good point, i like the fact that you think out your creatures before drawing them... i like stories before the ideas.

Shockbolt In reply to SummonersOnline [2006-09-12 05:22:21 +0000 UTC]
As for the third...i might put a flying creature or demon infront of him..a bit closer than the black knight whom will also be left out in the third version aswell.

Shockbolt In reply to SummonersOnline [2006-09-12 05:13:05 +0000 UTC]
I'm thinking of switching the whole image to a non-aggressive theme...maybe have a couple of royal griffins fly by infront of the knight...as if they were on patrol or something...leaving out the black knight coming towards him

Those clouds and lighting in them are just amazing. It almost looks like a nebula of some kind which is seems rather neat and gives it a more fantastical atmosphere for the duelers.

Hell yes! Dragonrider dogfights are one of my favorite fantasy motifs. The lighting in this piece is gorgeous and really dramatic.
