A lot of people in our latest poll asked for tutorials about coloring and markings. We'll be addressing some of the more common coloring mistakes we see, and decided to start with a topic that a lot of people seem to have trouble with: dilutes. Dilutes are a simple mechanic once you know how they work, but if you don't know then they can appear very complex. We hope this tutorial is useful if you want to figure out how to incorporate dilutes into your DARPG art! Also a small section on Merles as well.(Of course, you do not ALWAYS have to follow this tutorial. If you're content with not paying any mind to genetics when you design dogs, that is entirely your choice and you're free to do as you like. But, it never hurts to know!)(

Dog genetics are just IMPOSSIBLE TO GET!
Horse genes are 100% easier!
Every marking has a name.
If the letters, for example Tobiano (ToTo) are capital (TOTO) baby will get the color. It it's not capital (ToTo) baby will not be. XD lol simple

Yes, white spotting is controlled by the S locus. The genes occur in a dominant-to-recessive hierarchy of S (solid), si (Irish), sp (piebald), and sw (extreme piebald). Depending on the combination of the two genes you can get different patterns.

What genetics will an 'orange' dog with a white spots? (one lightning shape spot on her neck and white socks)

If she has white on all her feet + neck, she is probably Irish white (sisi). If she has feet without white or only a small bit of white on her neck, she is probably minimal white (S+ si, sp, or sw). Depending on what the father looks like, she could probably have puppies that also have minimal white or Irish white.

wait. o, it's an amazing tutorial but.. i dont understand what people mean with double merle. i mean.. you cant breed two dogs with the mrle gene otherways it will be daungerous?? ò.ò (seriously, i am trying to understand...)

That is correct. Almost all merle dogs you see in real life only have one copy of the merle gene (Mm). If a dog has two copies (MM) it very commonly leads to ear and eye defects, or stillborn puppies. That is why you should never breed two merle dogs together, because there's a chance of one of the puppies being (MM). Here's an example of a double merle dog: [link]

omgs poor pup D: i understand... that's good to know (i have no dogs in real life, but when i grow up i may and i wanted one with merle coat. that's good to know before i would've done a stupid thing ;_

I would just like to say Liver is not a dilute. Like you said, the dilution locus is the D locus, therefore the loci on the D locus are genes affecting dilution. Liver is on the B locus, therefore the loci on the B locus affecting eumelanin production. The D locus affects eumelanin production by limiting the amount of eumelanin that is produced, while the B locus affects the type of eumelanin being produced. So, I would probably stop calling Liver a dilution. I scrolled through the rest of your tutorial, and it checks out fine! That was my only complaint. It's a very good thing to do this too, because many people that are into the virtual breedings apparent on this site know squat about genetics and it infuriates me to see a blue and black or black and liver dog. Thank you

We were more focused on the broad concepts rather than terminology, as complex terminology tends to confuse people and the point of this is to be as simplistic as possible. But thanks for the heads up.

I figured, I just wanted to throw out the correction to simply make sure that you yourself were aware of that and I see that you are, but yes, too complex terminology becomes hard for the human mind to process. Again, lovely explanation, I'm sure it will help clear out many others thoughts about the intimidating topic of genetics.
