Description
Shunsui as a dragon and Ukitake as a koi. The dynamic of these two characters as potential soul mates / two halves of a working system pairs nicely with the myth about koi swimming up river to become dragons. As koi ascend to heaven (Shunsui becoming head captain), their bodies transform and they attain a new form to take on their new life up above. The patterns on their body reminded me of the effects from the Mimihagi as well, and as symbols of strength, struggle, and innocence, I see them as a good fit for Ukitake as well. His condition due to his sickness and eventually his role in hell suits the motif as well, as he moved farther and farther away from “the heavens,” losing any potential for him to become a dragon as well. These two are linked by destiny, and I really don’t think one could work as well as a character without the other. They are very unique in this way.
