Description
The Sorboczechoslovak Republic in 1936, in an alternate history where the Decembrist revolt succeded. The republic was created in the partition of Austria in the Congress of Venice, 1827, and is now part of the industrial core of Europe, and like much of Eastern and Central Europe, a liberal republic. It's broadly pro-slavic policies have resulted in the disenfranchisement of the sizable German minority, and the smaller but nonetheless important Jewish and Roma population. In Sorbia and the Sudetenland, areas where Germans often outnumber Slavs, the Republic is a symbol of marginalisation to many and a protector of the status quo to few. Decades of exclusionary polices have lead to the development of Radicalism amoung many of Sorboczechoslovakia's minorites, represented most notably by the German-Yiddish Worker's Party, and a sizable restorationist undercurrent in parties such as the German People's Party of Freedom, which aims for the restoration of German control in the former Saxon/Austrian lands. Despite increasing polarisation under Sorboczechoslovakia's proportional system the Sorboczechoslovak National Party has maintained control of the national assembly through gerrymandering, propaganda and pandering economic polices. That the republic has remained so stable is most likely due to it's marked prosperity.
Political Parties:
- Sorboczechoslovak National Party (SČSNS) - Liberal, centralist
- German-Yiddish Worker's Party (NJDS) - Radical, German nationalism
- German People's Party of Freedom (NLSS) - Restorationist, Saxon nationalism
- Republican party of Farmers and Peasants (RSZML) - Conservative, agrarianism
- Party of Bohemian Restoration (SBR) - Restorationist, political Catholicism
- Czech-Yiddish Party of Nothing (JSN) - Radical, nihilism
- Sorboczechoslovak Federal Party (SČSFS) - Liberal, federalist
- Slovak Block (SNS-SOUK-PAS-PNS-PSDZ) - Various, Slovak/regional parties
An influential part of the Central Economic Zone (outlined in grey), which holds a 67% share of the Republic's exports, Sorboczechoslovakia nonetheless maintains a neutral foreign policy outside of it's narrow sphere, although it has joined the other two members of the CEZ in pressuring the Duchy of Galicia-Lodomeria to quell it's growing restorationist movement, a new symptom of the tense relations between the final Hapsburg Duchy and it's Eastern European neighbours.
Although Roma are not listed on the ethnic data in the factsheet this is due not to lack of numbers but rather that Roma was not listed as an ethnicity on the 1935 national census, and thus most Roma listed themselves as Czech, Slovak or Hungarian. Numbers vary but the Roma population is estimated to be something near 3% of the Sorboczechoslovak population. By contrast, although nominally and politically of great import, Sorbs in the Republic only make up 0.88% of the population.
