Title and idea from Wake Up Call by Hawthorne Heights [link] I really like the lyrics, and been thinking of this picture for a while now.Could be viewed in two ways:
1. Altair is consumed by guilt and and pain because of Mal's supposed hate of him, and tries to commit suicide by drowning. Angered by this decision, Malik tries to save him
2. Malik is overcome by his hate for Altair, and tries to kill him. Altair is depressed, and does not try to stop him because he wouldn't want to live with Malik hating him.
Both ways, Altair's death signifies his "waking from the nightmare". If the one you loved didn't want anything to do with you, I'd definitely think that as a nightmare.

I dont hate Altair... But when I see Malik and Altair togheder, I remmember what he done to Malik and Im getting angy how he can let Altair stay alive with that.

what i see: Altair was being an idiot and got thrown in the water after being beat senseless by Templars. Malik was on a mission with him when it happened. instead of repeating the mistakes he made in the fight with Kadar, he risks his own life by jumping in to save him instead of killing the Templars. tada im a genius

I sort of saw this as Altair being a dipshit and falling into the water, and Malik diving in to save him before he drowned.
Eventually, Malik manages to drag a very agitated Altair out of the water, and makes a crude joke about him having the swimming capacity of a kitten made out of lead. Or something.

Looks more like he's trying to save him. But that's what I'd rather him be trying to do.
