"What do you mean you brought the wrong shirt?"

"I mean I saw a white collared shirt and I grabbed it for you five minutes before we left!"

"But-- the polos have a completely different feel to them than this one! I don't understand how you could mix them up!"

"I'm aware of the difference in fabric, Rajesh, but this is the only shirt we have that will fit you right now. Unless you'd rather go in that ratty t-shirt, or maybe with no shirt and just the vest?"

"I mean, 'that ratty t-shirt' will be underneath the vest, so--"

"Shut up, you have to wear the show jumping shirt, it's gotta be white or something light and this is all we have for you right now," Frankie snapped, shaking the pressed white shirt in Rajesh's direction inside the tack room. "And that black shirt you were wearing isn't gonna cut it."

Rajesh took the clearly not-meant-for-cross-country collared shirt with a perplexed look. "Why are you so mean to me--"

"Because you're up in less than ten minutes and I haven't even tacked up Eclaire for you yet! Put it on or I'll make you," she threatened, slipping out the door and closing it behind her.

He looked down at the shirt she'd thrust into his arms, and sighed, pulling it over his shoulders and starting on the buttons. He understood the need for propriety, honestly he did-- but this was cross country. There were fewer (and less strict) rules on what outfit choices were acceptable. He could probably get away just fine with "that ratty t-shirt." The only problem was, Frankie would probably have an aneurysm if he did, and she was already short-tempered because of some things he hadn't put away in just the right place for her to find them when it was time to tack Eclaire up.

Eclaire was probably aware of all the stressed vibes the two of them were putting off, but whether she was aware or not, she didn't respond to it and stayed patient and still while Frankie slid the headstall up over her ears as Rajesh emerged from the tack room. Frankie was crooning praises to the Zlesdin mare while she buckled the bridle in place, and Rajesh tucked his shirt in and shrugged the vest on just before she handed him the reins to hold.

"I'm really glad I get to ride her for this," he confessed as they started walking at a quick clip towards the starting point, with his helmet under one of Frankie's arms. "She's so willing and knows what's expected, she's wonderful."

"Careful, or I'll get jealous," Frankie teased, patting the mare's neck. "She is great, though. And as much as I love working with the Zlesdins I'll be heading back up north soon, it's so friggin' hot down here and I can't take it."

"Well, she'll definitely miss you even if I don't."

"Okay, rude."

"Hey, I said if."

"The lack of an 'if' was implied."

"It can't have been implied to not be there if it was already there."

"Shut up, give her to me and put your helmet on," Frankie ordered with a badly hidden smile. "Time for you two to get moving."

This was one big exercise in using Photoshop brushes in the background, and making them look acceptable and not like they were just pasted there. But I learned a lot and had fun, and that's the whole point, right?
