Description This is the piece that I've been working on and extremely off on for weeks with art block. Yes, this ridiculous thing. These are all of the characters from my original story, Genjou o Mamoru (Protecting the Present Circumstances) which I will be novelizing within the next couple of months!

"Yamano Kichiro Kichiro is a pleasant high school student, but he keeps himself shrouded in mystery. His secret is his grotesque scar which he received in an accident years ago. Now a full-fledged priest, he has been granted special powers by God to vanquish the demons that are attempting to take over the world in order to maintain the state of the present peace."

Clockwise from the top right: Kichiro, his brother Hikaru, Kichiro in priest form, his father and grandfather, his crush's friend Keiko, his friends the twins Hideaki and Takumi, and Takara, his crush and friend.

The novel is now on sale, and you can read the first 10 pages here: [link]

Many thanks! I checked the website and it's up but this isn't an actual manga, it's a regular novel.Β  It's pretty a pretty old work, now, but it's still available here: www.lulu.com/shop/archie-willi…

I dunno what you're talking about, I think you have done a great job with this. With as many characters as you have here, it would have taken me monthes. ;^;

I love the placement and the book cover feel to this. It would makes a great cover or a chapter separater or something. ^^

Nicely done.

I have an idea for this piece, but don't know if it will work without actually seeing it done. His cape practically reaches from one side to the other, so I'm wondering if making the entire space below it black (with his legs for the most part hidden in the shadow) would up the intensity of the piece and anchor it at the same time. Plus the new black space would be great for a title or text in white, if need be. You could even frame the entire thing in a black border

Ah heck, maybe it's better to show you what I mean.....[link]

ShouYume In reply to Oshouki [2009-03-27 17:24:55 +0000 UTC]

Ye--oooh, I like that border, especially! But I dunno if the black shadow will work... see he doesn't have a cape, but rather, they're sleeves. And they really don't go down that far, I just do that to be dramatic; but since I am being dramatic, it's probably a great idea in that some kinda shadow may work! Here are some images where you can see his 'sleeves' more clearly (and in a length more respective to their proper size. Forgive the images, they get worse the farther back you go, but in the oldest image you can see how they look on the backside!)

I do want to try that alternate version with a shadow! How do you think it could be best applied in the sleeve case? '.' Please advise, and thanks bunches for your critique! =3

Oshouki In reply to ShouYume [2009-03-27 22:52:20 +0000 UTC]

I think that in the case of a promotional-poster, you don't need to hold strict to details of character design. The emotion, mystery and subtle foreshadowing should trump those details. You want the image to raise question and curiosity in the audience's mind, to make people want to read the story.

Just like my suggestion earlier about the book itself, revealing too much at the beginning kills the excitement of discovery for the audience. So in this case, who cares if the image accurately depicts sleeves or cape, the imagery being conveyed is he's light walking in the face of darkness. Let the audience fill in the details and blanks themselves. But, that is my humble opinion. Please take it with a grain of salt.

Hey, don't feel bad that you've worked on this on and off, it looks good to me I love the concept you have for this as well! It's very clean and the characters don't look all jumbled up in the image. Very good piece!
