According to the book, "Guillotine: The Timbers of Justice" by Robert Opie, it wasn't just women who wore these tight, red strings around their necks.Β All relatives who lost a loved one to the guillotine blade wore them.Β It actually became fashionable for a while.Β Too, back in the 70s, whenever news came out of another guillotine execution, many people, both women AND men, would tie a red string tight around their necks as a symbol of being beheaded.Β I remember it well as I myself, and numerous friends, would do the same thing.Β Β We would tie a red string around our necks.Β I had even found a little guillotine charm, and wore it right centred on my throat directly below my Adam's apple.Β Several of my friends got the same charm and wore it the same way.Β Thinking back, it was kind of kinky!Β Wished I knew what happened to that charm!

I love the contrast of the red against the black and white--it goes well with the concept. I hadn't any idea of the latter information until now. owo We recently learned about the French Revolution about a week ago or so. :0 Awesome job.

A very well posed photo, great light, gives it good dimension. I love the concept and the string really does give it a severed look.

awesome concept, it even looks like the string is a cut and blood should be dripping down at any second.

reminds me of one of those "scary" stories i heard of as a kid. a guy meets a woman who wears a black ribbon around her neck and never takes it off, so one night when she's sleeping he undoes it and her head rolls off because she had been beheaded decades beforehand.
...It's a bit off topic, but it's the first thing that came to my mind when i saw this.

I love it! A reincarnation of A la guillotine! Tres bien! The simplicity has an astounding effect with the powerful message behind it and it makes you stop and think about how easy our lives have become compared to the rodent/disease infested streets of France during le revolutionne...

Nice historical allusion. And I think your decision to have everything grayscale save the string was a good one; it really makes the picture.
Now I'm having flashbacks back to grade 9 art. . . .
