Description Hi all! I made a design for the chinese Celestial. Of all it is the one which most resembles the previous design. The blue spots make it very obvious it is Temeraire, but one can only paint one color for the spots.

***

Breed Name: Celestial
National Loyalty: Mostly Chinese
Physical Characteristics: Black
Special Abilities: Divine Wind, they can hover in the air by beating their wings backward and forward
Known Members: Temeraire, Lung Tien Qian, Lung Tien Chuan, Lung Tien Lien, Lung Tien Ming, Lung Tien Zhi, Lung Tien Chu, Grandfather

Celestials are an extremely rare Chinese breed of dragon, exclusively able to employ the "Divine Wind." Only members of the Emperor's family are permitted to be companions to Celestials. At one time there were only eight Celestials in the world, listed above. Because all Celestials are so closely related, they do not mate with each other, but with Imperials, producing a Celestial egg (occasionally, the mating of two Imperials also results in a Celestial). Celestials are similar in appearance to Imperials. They are usually darkly colored (with the exception of Lung Tien Lien which is an albino) with blue markings. They have five talons on each foot and their wings have six spines, as opposed to most dragons' five. They are able to beat their wings forward and backward, which gives them the ability to hover in midair. When Celestials mature, they grow a ruff around their head and tendrils along their bottom jaw, distinguishing them from Imperials. By British standards, Celestials are somewhat overlong for their weight. While nearly as tall as Regal Coppers, Celestials weigh about half as much, which still puts them among heavy-weight dragons. Sir Edward Howe also noted that the way in which they carry their tail is very odd, not characteristic at all of the British dragons that Sir Edward was familiar with, as they carry their tail off the ground, lashing the air gently as they walk, whereas Regal Coppers such as Maximus drag their tails behind them. Another distinguishing feature of Celestials is that where most dragons lose their early facility with language acquisition and memorization after about their fifth or sixth week (according to Joulson), Celestials retain these facilities throughout their lives. The "Lung Tien" in all the names of Celestials means "Dragon Celestial".

And thanks!

Awesome design.

Your dragons are really cool ,and a great ideia to image them in the books.

Can you call Temeraire "Lung Tien Xien"? I just cant. For me he's just Temeraire. And a cool character

Indeed it is.

Having two names can considered classy, anuway, and he deserves classy.

Going in book two for now, the trip to China. Really loving each page, and the author can sometimes surprise with welcome chances in pace and style. Really an example of "what to do" in fiction

S7alker117 In reply to shyangell [2010-10-17 12:46:46 +0000 UTC]

Far from a childrens book.

This is high-quality fantasy. The best I've seen in a very long time. The best fantasy books I've read were when I was a teenager. His Dark Matterials, from Phillip Pullman, The Hobbit, from Tolkien, Bartimeas Chronicles, from Jonathan Stroud, and Scourge, from J Robert King. I've read Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings (loved the movie, though) and a lot of other books, but none really caught my imagination again.

And now I'm reading Temeraire. Really well-thought and entertaining fantasy, with meaningful characters. Its simply awesome!

shyangell In reply to S7alker117 [2010-10-17 15:38:53 +0000 UTC]

I have read all of the above except for the Bartimeas Chronicles and Scourge; and all before I was a teenager... and maybe because of that they did capture my imagination irreversibly (I cannot agree about Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings though, because they're amazing, for me the Lord of the rings was better that the Hobbit, but I read it before... anyways, it really doesn't matter). But I have to agree that WHEN you read a book influences a lot the perception you have of it, and that may imprint it for the rest of you life.

Now, I am not a teenager though, and the Temeraire Series is still a fantastic creation that merges an incredible narrative, a meticulously created universe and a coherency that are unusual in most fantasy novels. And I love it.

S7alker117 In reply to shyangell [2010-10-17 16:28:37 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. I totally agree with your opinion about Temereire.

About LotR and HP... Its like I dont think they're good, they are. But LotR was a bit slow pace for my taste. Never was able to get to end of it. The fartest I was able to go was to the midle of the 3rd book. I was getting truely anoyed by that time.

As for Harry potter. I loved the first ones. But then I read The Hobbit, and never was able to go back into Rowlings writting. I was never again capable of being satysfied with her universe, ya know. It wasnt enough for me anymore

But I totally agree they are good and important in the history of fantasy. They're just not my scene.

Bartmaeus is very good, though. Its also alternate History fantasy, and is about people who can call entyties from the spirit realm. It really has the feel of a mystery novel, with murders, thefts of important artyfacts and secret societies. The endings are always surprising, even if the bulk of the story seems predictable, theres something that turns our minds around

Scourge is different, lets say. I read around the Internet that it is one of the lowest ranked novels of Magic The Gathering universe. I found it very interesting, though. It features some very powerfull characters, capable of transforming reality, and elder warriors capable of changing the world, even if their not capable of fighting anymore. It has those small fantasy details turned upside down, and, as I said, wizards and gods with true power. Sometimes the problem of fantasy is that the charachters say that there are powerfull wizards and stuff, and when the time arrives, they are not capable of doing nothing really special. At least is how I see things, and thats why I wasnt able to go back into HP.

Maybe I'm not making any sense, though.

Simply put, I kinda like characters bigger than life. Apart from that, a very coherent and well paced story would be good too.

As I said, every good writer as his / hers qualities, and its good to have variety. Its up to us to find what we really like among all of those

I think I made a mistake when drawing them because I countes the smallish thumb as a sixth spine, without realizing in other dragons I hadn't... and the result is they have the same number in the end ... I should be ashamed, I can never remember this things systematically and... bleh

For me, yes you can, as long as somewhere it says it's mine.
Only problem you may have is that while the design and ART belongs to me, the characters and breed belong to Naomi Novik. (Thankfully Novik is only a writer and never did pictures of Celestials, so the art's mine, ).

O_o I think we have a problem with keyboard compatibility, I can't read a single breed you type. Must be that my computer has a typo problem, because it's like "jhsiiahΓ‘jbd" instead of something that makes sense! The only one that reads OK is celestial, and that really buggers me.

Oh, well... I'm doing a parnassian next (I've just posted the Chequered Nettle )
