Description So I've hopped aboard my first DA meme. I'm not going to go into much detail with who's who and why they are my influences....so here we go..

1. The Disney Afternoon (back when american kid's shows were fairly well written and well animated)

2. Giorgio Cavazzano (my biggest influence of all time...honestly, it should probably just be him on this page and nothing else)

3. Robert Kirkman (author of some my fave comic series, Invincible and The Walking Dead)

4. Walt Kelly (I don't think you can find cuter comics anywhere)

5. Donald Duck (temper temper...I can relate)

6. Chuck Jones (no explanation needed, I don't think)

7. Peyo (beautiful line work and characterizations, I've loved his art since I was a teeny kid)

8. David Sedaris (author; hilarious and sarcastic)

9. My family (kinda goes without saying...they really mold who you become)

10. Jeff Smith (master of the black and white, as well as wondeful simple poses and expressions)

11. Mike Kunkel (glad to see someone almost animate kids' comics...nice raw pencil drawings)

12. Slappy Squirrel (queen of cartoon sarcasm)

13. Ed, Edd n' Eddy (working on this show really helped hone my cartooning skills)

14. Jeffrey Brown (autobiographical comics...life, love, sex...I love the honesty in his work)

15. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (probably the only animated film in the past 20 years that still makes my jaw drop when I watch it)

16. Cars - my second love in life.

17. Kurt Vonnegut (author; brilliant)

Wow, you worked on Ed, Edd n' Eddy? That's one of my favorite shows! What was it like working on it?

Since you love Who Framed Roger Rabbit, have you ever seen The Thief and the Cobbler, or Richard Williams' other work? Youtube channel here:

Glad to hear it! I run that Youtube account and did the Recobbled Cut restoration, so pardon me if I'm a little evangelical about the film. One of my favorites for sure.

Walt Kelly, and Chuck Jones are da bomb! I pretty much love everything you listed here. Even though I hate the way conflict is produced in the shows plot, Ed, Edd n' Eddy had an amazing art style. I wonder what Lupo the Butcher's show would've been like? Roger Rabbit is pretty amazing too. I like how your comics capture that nostalgic effect of the collectible Disney ones you see on Ebay. All your work just screams of historic animation research and film study. Animaniacs/Tiny Toons are among those charming shows that I can't believe even were allowed to exist. They are so good!

You know, Eric Schwartz watches MLP:FiM and mentioned it on Sabrina Online. You might not know him. He is a big Pogo/Flip the Frog buff that made a name for himself with some of the best Amiga animations and this long running comic series.

Even the old-school animators are into Friendship is Magic. Cartoons need a show like this every once in a while to spice things up. You guys really captured the Loony Toons vibe, especially with Pinkie Pie. (Pepe le Peu/Bugs Bunny *wink wink*) Robert Scribner would be proud! The touch of anime brings is the icing on the cake.

haha, I liked that strip with Pinkie and the Transformer

And I agree, there are so many cartoons from our past that will never been seen again (shows like it). I'm grateful to have them though.

At least we can hope the new creators find inspiration in them. If so, the future is in good hands. It is hard to beat the classics. But, I swear, you guys are in the process of making one. Some shows are underdeveloped, while others are overcooked. But, you guys really hit the nail on the head. The balance and dynamism in your formula is exquisite. Like, I cannot imagine the cast being any different, or the visual designs for that matter. I always worry about publishing my work, because it is really tough for fans to accept a new canon/re-boot if I refine an idea or fix a plot hole. There is this challenge of building a world you can accept as complete, and then press play on the universe you've built.

Well, everyone that worked on season 1 has/is working on season 2, so there won't be THAT much of a difference I don't think.

Yeah, people got all worked up about Lauren stepping down, but I think the roots are already deep in the ground and this metaphorical tree can only grow. One thing I noticed, is how strong the canon/bible of the series is. In most shows for that age group, they never get close to it. I think the strength of the production, is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Only a team could have put together that show, and if enough of the team sticks together or passes on their methods to the news members it will continue to be just as good. I don't think one person from the team could do it alone, because all your input pools together.

My new-canon/reboot thing was more of an anxiety about my own projects. You guys seem to have everything worked out. I am not in the least bit worried that Season 2 will be anything less than spectacular.

I've seen you do some little character designs, but I wonder. Do you have your own original concepts/stories you are trying to develop? Sometimes, when people fawn over an artist because they helped create something, they forget that there is more to them than what you know them by. Are you working on anything like that on the side, or is your focus currently on building the ethos and nurturing the development of pre-existing worlds? I'm always fascinated by the answers I get to that question.

Sibsy In reply to Viethra-Schepherd [2011-07-29 19:01:48 +0000 UTC]

As for my own characters, no. For some reason (and it's always been this way), I've never had an idea strong enough, or cared enough about to take further. I feel that I don't really have anything of importance to say with a cartoon, so I've been content working on other people's projects. Who knows, as I get older things may change - but as of right now I'm pretty good.

Viethra-Schepherd In reply to Sibsy [2011-07-29 21:48:36 +0000 UTC]

Part of why I think I write original stories and design new characters and such, is that I'm afraid my technical skills will never be consistent or impressive in their own right. I can create vast stories and worlds, but my attempts at interpretation are limited. You seem to have the skill to build on anything you're set to, no matter how classic or iconic. I would venture to say what you do is harder than what I do. You have the task of finding the spark and the life in characters that came from the imagination of another whole person. You have to look deep into the line art and capture the spirit contained within. I know exactly who it is I'm drawing because I made them. Part of what you have to do is introduce yourself to the characters and get to know them before you can draw them. I think, based on the illustrations you've done of characters I recognize, you are successful at that. There are so many side to illustration.

I can definitely see most of those influences in your work. Except for Jeffrey Brown. That's a surprise.

It's a possibility?...I know I've known of Pogo since I was little...?

But yea, Jeffrey Brown...I love his stuff so much...just the weird awkwardness and nice timing between panels. That, and I really admire the fact that he doesn't dwell on pretty drawings. I aspire to be that way one day!
