hmm nice concept and well painted but colors are distubing me a little. Not that you choose bad colors or something but this half/half effect-left side ship and right serpent. But overall really good work and the serpent looks great

SigbjornPedersen In reply to AnetaChalimoniuk [2013-03-27 20:55:54 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for being honest. The reason I chose to make it like this, is cause I wanted the serpent to have a kinda aura of darkness.
Kinda like when the serpent comes to the surface the weather changes and the dark clouds are filling the place, slowly replacing the bright day with dark, heavy clouds. Thats why I have so much dark compared to light colours aswell as the fact that I chose the colour red, I wanted to create a little dark, scary, dangerous mood to it, but not loose too much light at the same time.

And to be honest the sky wasnt a high priority in this painting either, I guess we just got different opinions cause I think it came out pretty great!

Just out of curiousity, how would you have made it? Allways looking for new tricks to learn.

Thank you for the comment!

I understand what you mean and to answer your question I would add more details to the background and make little bit softer transition between cold and warm colours. Don`t get me wrong it`s only my opinion and my way of creating my art but you can`t say that something in your art have highier priority than something else, everything in you painting should be treated the same way-that`s how I see craeting a good art

Yeah we disagree on that sky part thats pretty clear, I guess its just a matter of preference.

Okey, well we seem to make art pretty different, so I guess its just a matter of preference on the skies.
I think this looks better cause the harder the reds fade away, the thicker the black skies appear.
softer transiton in colours: if you are talking about the cold and warm colours on water, ship and serpent, theyre there for a purpose, to make these areas grab attention, and make them seem more real, and iteresting.

Second thing I have to disagree with aswell, I think its realIy important to have areas at the painting where you focus more than other areas, wich is the serpent and the vikingship and the sea in this case. Reason is, to create good focal points, where you want the viewer to look at first.
this is the place the viewer will look first, and will study this area better than the other areas of the painting, without doubt. at these places, extra detail is better.

The further away from the focal points, the less detail. Im not saying this is allways true for all types of paintings, but for paintings of forexample battles, fights, creatures and so on, this is most often true.

A rule of thumb is, if you paint the ground (the sea in this case) very detailed, the air can be less detailed, and also the other way around and it will still look good, depending on the perspective and painting.
