H'okay, this is "finished" for the moment simply because once again, I won't have time to work on it before the contest deadline. : PWhat I started with can be found here --> [link]
And with all of you lovely people's helpful critiques, I updated:
Made the shadow on the ground darker. Bumped up the contrast on the deer, gave him some white in his eye (there was more but it looked odd to me), and gave him spots. Moved the whole top portion of the bird upward and connected it to the legs a little more obviously. (For those with balance questions, the idea was that the big "flap" in the back of the bird would help to balance it when walking. The wings were intended to be used more for leverage than for actual flying, sort of like. Uh. A predatory chicken. ..With three legs. Or something.) Added the teeth on the underside. Fuddled with his legs a bit and made them a little more sturdy.

It doesn't look good for the poor deer...
The teeth on the underbelly were a good idea - the rest of the bird is kinda scary, but those teeth just make my blood run cold... It's hot here and it made me shiver anyway!

This is funny. When I viewed this, I actually blinked and leaned forward, trying to figure out what the hell is going to eat that poor deer!
...Then I remembered the god of Full View.

Like a snapshot, I can totally see every bit of movement in both the predator and the prey. The sketchyness, yet the full painting-ness with that warm color scheme...I really can't word it well, but I hope you get what I mean. 
Also, that deer is cute. I wanna hug it.

aw, you know, what? I had a deja vu feeling when I looked at this picture.... Oo
anyway, I love it. it has everything the painting should have - drama, beauty, fear and the story behind... I really like the atmosphere, but also the way you did it. some things are very detailed and the other - only roughly painted. for me, it looks nice

I love to see people who ask for crits and then IMPLEMENT them, as you did here - so many just go "oh but that's like that because ______" and just refute all the crits and it's like "so what was the point of asking...?".
