Description
The unintended hiatus is over with. Now back to ponies in space! Or… on a planet, in this case. Either way, the action begins!
Choices are neither “good” or “bad” here. In this instance, both will cause some good and will cause something unpleasant. Will you be proactive in addressing this potential threat or will you hold your position and maintain a better defensive position?

Be alert and do not abandon the post. It is better to have an effective defensive position. Judging from this strip, the defensive force is small, so it's better to stick together as a unit then to send squad mates out and thinning out the group. Also, the princess could provide support for the squad and and protect the civilians.

Why is there no "protect the civilians" option? Nonetheless, I say "investigate", because it's the only rational decision. Sitting and waiting for something to attack is just stupid.

Ah, it seems I didn't communicate what the options really meant well enough, my bad. By staying, you're not abandoning your post of protecting the princess and the group of civilians with her, but you have no idea what's coming and may not be able to react as quickly. By going to investigate, you might know what's happening earlier, but your defenses might not be as strong.

Well, since Commander Speartip here is the one in charge of it all, her orders are THE orders.

Be alert, do not abandon post. I have a feelinging it's better to keep the attack force as stong as possible around Twilight. Sending scounts could lead to casulties and weaken the perimiter.

She's saying generic pleasantries and small talk while she interacts with the citizens, I'd imagine. I think I scribbled "Of course, we would be" as part of some larger, uninteresting sentence, like "Of course, we would be honored to come back for the Hearth's Warming Eve festival." Or something like that.

This is a tough decision. No doubt there's some mysterious dangerous threat is about to attack, but both options to handle it have their own merits and problems.
You could send a few squad-mates to check it out, which may give you the benefit of knowing what the threat before it approaches and prepare appropriately, perhaps call for evac or support. However, there's no doubt that whatever it is would be beyond the ability for the squad-mates to handle. They would be wiped out and thin the number of ponies protecting the Princess would be thinned out, weakening squad's overall ability to protect the Princess. Even worse if the squad-mates sent fails to report before they are killed.
You could be alert but stay put, that way you have a full squad worth of defenders with weapons to defend the princess from whatever it is about to attack, thereby fulfilling their duty. However, without reconaissance, you won't know what it is until it hits the Princess, thus unable to prepare properly, or call for evac or support more quickly.
... I would say send a few squad mates for reconnaissance and hope for the best, in my opinion.

Wow... I've literally taken the words out of my mouth. I fully agree with you and support the decision to send a team on patrol... is undoubtedly the most logical choice.
Also, now the soldiers are talking to each other, and in case of problems the military logic does provide an inspection before deciding how to move the rest of the troops, especially in this case where the mission is to protect the princess. A soldier on a mission must always remain alert, no matter how quiet or delicate the situation might be. And if there was a potential threat, then the investigation is in order.
Not for nothing there are the scout troops, right?

Equitariuum In reply to BrutalityInc [2014-03-14 23:23:10 +0000 UTC]
Sometimes it's nice to be right... XD
It must be said, however, that the other choice is not completely wrong... in the sense that it is not illogical, but given the situation in which our protagonists are now, this is not a choice "militarily correct".
Analyzing the thing with a bit of logic, in fact, if you decide to send troops on patrol means that fewer soldiers will remain in place, then you'll have to face a threat with fewer soldiers available than before... But this applies to cases in which there is located in an area clearly dangerous and few in number... and of course if you are already in a few it is not wise to send someone scout ahead with the risk of being seriously unprotected...
But now all the bodyguards are there ready to respond to any threat, and do not forget a spaceship ready to step in with reinforcements and air support... then send two or three soldiers scout ahead is a correct choice, militarily speaking.

Given it's a Mass Effect crossover, and each installment of Mass Effect have a reputation of having massive character casualties at the beginning of the stories, it probably won't.
