What shocks me is that this takes place so far into the future that ponies have taken their seat among the stars, but the symbol implies no new ponies have ascended to Alicornhood in all that time.

It's a bit unusual how Twilight is stepping across his speech bubble in the first panel. But I guess when you are a cosmic space princess you can do what you want.

Awesome!
For these sort of choices, I've left the Tumblr open to anonymous responses, but I've been recording the answers from here too. When the important, story-altering decisions come along, I'll probably be enforcing the Tumblr with-account only thing.

I'm trying to encourage people to use tumblr, but I've been recording the answers from both there and here. I'll enforce using tumblr later on more important decisions, but for now, it's all pretty relaxed.

Eh, I've been recording the answers from both sites. I may enforce the tumblr thing later when the decisions matter more, but for now, I'm taking from both.

On another note, Twi looks pretty good as a full grown alicorn
And: Damn you people jumping to the romance at the first occasion! It's only the beginning, and there's not enough character development yet to start this way. At least if you wanna make it a decent-length story...Ā
Okay i'm done with my micro rant. Continue

I'm glad you like!
Yeah... No romance options will be available for a while, but it is a very valid concern that this could get too shippy and get there too quickly. Hopefully I avoid that. Luckily, no one has yet to seriously suggest shipping any of the few introduced characters.

I guess I vote... Tell me a bit about this planet.
Future question: What do you specialize in? (Note: I have never played Mass Effect, but I assume that people still specialize in this or that. 'specially since, y'know, pone.)

SilFoe In reply to MagicaITrevor [2013-10-11 05:29:04 +0000 UTC]
That's right. There were different classes in the games and of course, ponies. Stupidly specialized ponies.

I see this series making a hard burn into shipfic territory. Anyway, I'm voting for "Tell me more about this planet".
I love how you've done the solid black shading, by the way. It really brings out the shapes and expressions of the characters. The only problem is the black makes the light seem really harsh. You could try using the same solid-color technique, but with different colors, to change the quality of the light in the scene.

SilFoe In reply to SeeNotC [2013-10-11 03:31:43 +0000 UTC]
It could get some romance aspects, but that's an "if". I'll test the waters first before introducing any romance subplot. If I do, it'll remain exactly that, a subplot. I loved that part about the Mass Effect series, but I loved it because of how unobtrusive it was. I know I'll also have to deal with people who might get butthurt about the final romance choice not being who they wanted it to be. Tricky situation all around.
I'll definitely be refining the art style as I go and get more comfortable with this style, so that comment is fantastic. I'll try to pay more attention to the light/dark dynamic and play with it a bit.

SeeNotC In reply to SilFoe [2013-10-11 05:23:31 +0000 UTC]
I also enjoyed the romantic sideplots in Mass Effect (Tali forever!). I was just commenting that in most fandoms, crossovers, tumblr, and majority rule are a perfect recipe for shipping.
And I'm really interested in the direction you take the art, as well as the story. You seem proficient in both cartoony and painterly styles, which isn't something you always find in fanart communities.
Also, how long does a panel like this take to make? I'm considering starting a comic of my own, but the few times I've tried a more comic book-type solid-line style, getting the lineart right took me nearly as long as it would have to just paint the whole thing with no lines at all.

SilFoe In reply to SeeNotC [2013-10-11 05:40:38 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that shipping pit is something I want to avoid. There's a bigger story to tell and the shipping is only there to enhance it.
I actively try to diversify my styles. That's half the point of this thing, to get me out of my painterly comfort zone. I haven't timed myself, but each panel is definitely a labor of love. I have some experience from classes with traditional pen and ink, so that helps. And I've gotten pretty comfortable with Photoshop's pen tool. That thing is a life saver in a program with no line smoothing. But each panel does take considerable time. I've taken some shortcuts like making the floor panel once and then copying and transforming it, but damn Twilight takes a lot of work to do!

SeeNotC In reply to SilFoe [2013-10-11 15:04:07 +0000 UTC]
Copy/transform has been insanely useful to me, as well as the vertical and horizontal guides. For some reason, I hold my head with a slight left tilt while I'm relaxed (think drawing, or sitting in class). There have been so many times when I've paused while drawing and flipped the image horizontally, only to discover that everything is slanted hard to the right. I used to erase and start over, but now I just grab the slanted part, tilt it back, and keep going.

SilFoe In reply to SeeNotC [2013-10-12 04:38:08 +0000 UTC]
I did that when drawing on paper set on a horizontal surface. there's a reason artists drawing tables are slanted.
š: 0 ā©: 1
SeeNotC In reply to SilFoe [2013-10-12 17:38:35 +0000 UTC]
You mean slanted upwards? That would actually be really nice. Now I want one of those... I'm currently using a five-year-old Wacom Bamboo Fun. It gets the job done, but it lies flat on the table, and my hand starts to cramp after I draw for more than a couple hours.

SilFoe In reply to SeeNotC [2013-10-12 19:08:44 +0000 UTC]
I meant the traditional drawing tables used by cartoonists and other artists. But yeah... They do make those tablets too. Too expensive for me though. Someday I'll be able to afford a Wacom Cintiq... Someday.
