Description I just suddenly felt like sitting down and drawing Christine. But… the original Christine, without the curly brown hair. And, well, this is what you get. ^^, Goshdarnit, but it’s been ages since I last drew Phantom art -- I’d forgotten how much fun it is.

Thank you. Ooh, I didn't think of that. Though, considering she's Christine, that's probably just her default expression.

The original is more a horror novel. Seriously. I was actually quite shocked when I read it, since all I knew of the story before was the movie and that is, let's face is, exceedingly cute and fluffy compared to the story's roots. There, the lair isnt some weird and trippy cross between Eastern bazaar, prop-and-gold-paint jumble sale and pimp pad. There, what you know about it is it's five freaking storeys below ground, damp, dark, there's no discernible door to Erik's house down there and if you were left there you could never escape, no-one would ever hear you scream and no-one would ever be able to find you!

Ok now i really really want that book, i mean i knew the literature was darker than the musical but i didnt think it when that far, sounds scrummy

Yep, pretty epic, but the dry I'm-writing-a-newspaper-article style of writing kind of dampens the subject matter. That's why I prefer Susan Kay's 'Phantom' - it has the best of both worlds.

Beautiful as always, love that skinny neck, so vulnerable, and her hair looks perfect Especially the little squiggle at the very back. Her lips look very good, and I like that you put the black on one side.

Silhouette01 In reply to Jaythegymnast [2011-02-18 14:16:27 +0000 UTC]

The black on one side is my lazy-ass concession to a background. Shh, don't tell.

But I'm glad she came across looking deer-in-the-headlights-ish -- that was exactly the effect I was going for, what with her being, well, Christine.

Seldom does one encounter the faithful rendering of the original Leroux Christine. It appears he overwhelming majority of Christine portrait are based on the ALW Version, so this was remarkably refreshing to behold such a delicate, ethereally poised portrait as Christine, true to her Swedish nationality.
The soft, gentle curves of her face denote her ingenue frailty in resonant volumes, as do her wide, curious, yet trepidation eyes.
The tilt of the nose is endearing and is accurate of her Nordic ethnicity.
How on earth did you execute such precise hair styles? I could never do them! It is like they are sculpted from perfect marble, yet still maintain such follicular dimensions.

I know! I love drawing ALW's Christine (I love drawing curls - obviously I'm a sucker for punishment DX) but every now and again you just gotta get back to basics, if you know what I mean.

Yay! I was hoping she'd look at least vaguely Swedish. It was the effect I was going for, but I didnt think I'd gotten it down very well in the end. Glad then to hear you managed to see it all the same.

Urg, I LOVE drawing hair!! I don't know why - even though it's so difficult - I still love to draw it. I'msoweird.

As I do, though my Phanart contribution has been nearly non-existent!
The ALW version of Christine bears an eerie resemblance to Sissi of Bavaria...
Yes, I do know what you mean, basics, that purity of origin is vital to rejuvenate one's artistic muse and ebb away that impending manque.

Yes, you muts know how your work alawys stuns me! When I look at your work, I feel faint from its powerful skill and gift you have! I kid you not!
This Christine is more angelic than the ALW's version, in my perception. What think you?
I do like drawing hair, but I do prefer drawing eyes and brows far more!

Meh, that's just because of the dress she wears during the movie's 'Think of Me'. Blatant ruddy plagiarism. And what with Erik's Red Death costume being pretty much joinked from a portrait of Napoleon's, I think that stupid costume department really shouldnt have been paid! *is cross*

I really cant pick a favourite - I like both equally, but for completely different reasons. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

I cant stand drawing eyes - somehow they just seem to be my nemesis.

Do not get me riled on the movie loathsome costume faux pas!!!!!!!!!!!
What asinine colors they used! Il Muto resembled the garish tawdry of an acud trip film, or a Jefferson Airplane concert!
Christine' Think of Me costume was an exact copy of Sissi's dress! Even the diamond pins in her hair!!!
AH! So you perceived that as well, that Erik looked like a Napoleon fell in a vat of barn red paint!
And the hairstyles! Carlotta' maids had coiffures like Dr Seuss gone haywire, not to mention that annoying hairdresser of hers having this pathetic pink streak in his hair.
In the Point of No Return, Erik seems to be copied from a paperback novel, or else a Spanish drama that is wholly perverted, and Christine appears far too voyeuristic.
Being of Spanish heritage, I despise these lustful, perverted stereotypes , which are really false, of Spanish culture! That version of Don Juan Triumphant was disturbing, Erik has a mind of beauty, not of lust and vulgar concepts!
Please pardon that rant, dear sister, but I felt compelled to apprise you of my opinions regarding the costumes and designs.

AMEN!! I can only agree to everything you've said - finally, someone who shares my views. I mean, dont get me wrong, the movie was how I was introduced to POTO, so it will always have a special place in my heart -- but, seriously??
They leaned too far in the direction of sex. I think maybe the director thought no-one would bother watching a film that wasnt blatantly sexy, or perhaps that PotO was such a boring story, without sex people wouldnt watch it. I dont know. I dont care. The point is, seriously, they shouldnt have done that.
Sensual I dont have a problem with. POTO is a very sensual story, period. Without that element, it wouldnt be the story we all know and love, but the movie went too far, what with the casting of Erik and Christine's boob-tastic wardrobe. Nope, sorry, not good.

Tete-DePunk In reply to Silhouette01 [2011-02-21 20:46:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes, exactly, without the movie, I would have NEVER discovered POTO, discoverer higher art, opera and Broadway, theatre, classic literature, in depth psychological characters, the mind itself, and of course meeting you!
But still, the director they chose was a poor one, they should have had Burton directed the movie.
Why must the popular and sinful notion is that sex for reason unknown makes for interesting plots?! The world's best plots had no sexual reference in them at all!!!!!!
you are right, the story must retain its sensualist, but this sensuality is of a spiritual and mental level, do you not think?

Christine's wardrobe appeared to have been from Victoria's Secret Gone Victorian!!

Well, I don’t know about Erik and Chris sharing any sort of mental intimacy. As a matter of fact, that was always something I was rather upset about, and, well, you know what I did as a result…

Also, I really do like the song PoNR - just the way they filmed it in the movie I didn’t like. (Also the whole movie was farcical since the whole idea it revolves around is some guy’s hideous disfigurement and if you then have Gerard Butler and his Rash O Doom acting it, well…) Point is, if you read the Kay book, you’ll see how it should be done. Those achingly beautifully described moments of how she almost leans her head on his knee whilst he’s reading to her, how she almost takes his hand during their outing to the Tuilleries, and other similar moments get the necessary feeling across far more poignantly than the movie’s PoNR ever could. It’s like a discreet nudge in the right direction vs. bashing someone over the head with a hammer.

Urg, that dress she visited her father's grave IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT IN WINTER in. Yeesh, people! Technically, she should have been dead after that!

Perhaps you are right, that is of Christine and Erik sharing this mental intimacy, though I must clarify that when two minds join, it creates an inseparable bond, regardless of the type of relationship involved.
Long live you know who!

To some extent, I enjoy the song likewise, though the lyrics are excessively sexual to some degree, or perhaps the images of Erik groping Christine as was done the film still leave my mind scrubbed like steel wool...
YES! What a sorry excuse for a deformity! What could they not make horrifying?!?! His whole life is hell because his deformity is monstrous! Hideous! Repulsive! Nauseating! Instead, we were given as you have so aptly put it, Rash O doom! In fact the deformity looked better than my acne! There was nothing truly repulsive!

But, yes, Kay;s book, it engrosses the very depth of one's soul reading. I can still remember the words, the lines, from the book, it is so rich, it is almost intoxicating. My favorite , well one of many, is when Erik describes music as being like a pool of hot water that eases and soothes an aching body. How true.

That dress! Dear me, I have seen swim suits with a less deep cleavage line!
I thought she visited the graveyard in the dawn?

Oh. I actually don't know. I don't think we're ever told whether it's straight or curly (or we are and I just forgot) but I've always just imagined it straight, I guess. ^^,

Ok, I think your right. It's not specific mentionet.
When Raoul remembers the time when father Daaé told him and Christine about Little Lotte which had blond, curly hair Raoul was immediately reminded of Christine so...that's why it stucked in my head.

Hmmm, I think in one scene it's mentionent maybe when Christines smiliarities with Little Lotte are mentioned. I will search it.
