I'm not interested in getting one, but thought I'd ask/theorize for clarity on a couple of things anyway because the species seems so interesting and well thought out already! c:
How would you describe the trails coming from the ears? On the tail you describe the squares as scales, so I imagine the ear-trails are scales too.
More specifically, my first thought was that they're softer scales, like fish, so they're more flexible. But maybe they have a connective tissue down the length of it so it stays healthy.
Having small inner tissue/veins down the length would deter people from purposely cutting or cropping them too.
Just a thought!
I'd love to see what kind of society these guys have too. Do they have unique clothing in some kind of themed cities (I imagine something kind of eastern to mimic the scroll-like tails), or are they generally undressed/natural and more tribe-like?

The squares are something like skin, they are alive and sensetive. They can connect with each other so they can make hairstyles but it. Its also important to save them to show your level in society.
They have both versions of the world - ancient, where they had classes and rituals, and nowadays, where they come as a normal people, just one more anthro species.
