- Vert from Hyperdimension Neptunia. I colored my traditional sketch digitally, just for practice. It took me way too long, with all the layers I color much more quickly traditionally...

Pretty cool to see both styles in one drawing! Yeah I can see how that'd take a long time
Though it turned out well

Love the vivid colors!

Interestingly, this is quite illuminating. When I compare yours to mine, it helps me see some areas where I need to improve. For instance, I can see that you did much better shading gradation, so I think that might be a good avenue of improvement for me. So this is very helpful.

And yeah, the layers can slow the process down (especially for me, since I tend to abuse them >.<). Overall, the digital process can be cumbersome at first, because there's so much more to manage. But I've found that switching from traditional to digital is mainly a matter of getting used to the workflow. It can take some time, but once you've gotten fully acquainted with the tools and workflow, it'll become a lot smoother and quicker. Especially because you can use digital tools to speed through some of the more tedious steps. So just keep at it; you're doing great!

Thank you! It was nice to compare your coloring to mine. I liked the way you colored details on her hair I was too lazy to try that. I hope we can learn from each other.Β

I'm sure I'll try coloring with layers again. You're right, it probably will be easier and quicker after some practice. I'm quick with some things on Gimp because I use them a lot

That is a really neat idea, taking a paper sketch and colouring it digitally.Β Β  It turned out beautifully, the colours are really rich and the hi lights in the hair really pop out. It makes me want to try it now. Β

does it not seam to you that digital art misses something that traditional has?

i think digital art needs special treatment ... interesting.. thing.. is
that there is no real traditional art on the internet.. its only digital
photos of traditional works; obviously, it is possible to create
digital works with digital detail depth that fills the
virtualy-traditional work's level of detail bar.....

i also think you don't need to use layers at all when working digitally, except
perhaps to achieve some effects. i find that makes things more simple,
natural, straight forward. i was using a separate layer for lineart,
coloring, another piece of drawing, basically to preserve things i don't
want lost. basically, because i was afraid of losing them. but the
truth is, they can't be lost and you shouldn't be afraid. overwriting
some part of your work, you can just as well fix it, because it all
came from you, i think its actual artistic aproach to it, as artists
kind of make mess but always achieve their striving at the end and they
are not satisfied untill they are satisfied. digital
work can lead us a little in lazy direction, comforming to the way the
system works. you can draw traditionally, in a digital environment,
breaking through. of course, thats just my point of view on things but i
hope its inspiring and maybe you find your own way to cope with the
digital environment as you are not limited in any way, you are using the computer to create your magnificent works and it, is not using you : )

i think digital art systems still need to be worked on. resolution
doesn't exist in traditional art, and vectors, ment to counter that
problem, introduce their own problems, straying away even more from the artist spirit and boundless
imagination, converting the careless freedome of paper to logic and
mathematical formulas and perhaps, worry about processing power and all
the other things not important and that shouldn't be a worry for an
artist.

...

i have decided to draw digital, in a traditional manner, on
raster canvas with resolution i set somewhat high enough and not burden
self with, and i am using a fun program called 'artweaver',
the free edition. check it, maybe the environment inspires you to get
more out of your GIMP : ) it seams to be especially friendly to traditional artists.

i've used GIMP in past but at the time, it didn't have a single window mode,
currently my computer has problems and because, GIMP doesn't work well
on it, so i can't check how the single window mode looks like, the
reason i left GIMP was floating docks and toolboxes together with the
way it looked. the new version appears to be more stylish, still, i do
wish now i could use any version of GIMP comfortably on this system, it
would be a good addition, its a great tool.

it is a fun idea to mix digital coloring over a traditional capture ( : the paper background looks like a cloudy sky.

I'm sure it misses a lot of things because I'm not very good with digital art Yes, it's interesting.

I used layers because I didn't know how to color it otherwise >.< I have tried digital art without layers when I have practiced landscape paintings though.

I haven't heard of artweaver but I'll check it out. And I haven't seen the new version of Gimp yet.

Thanks for the comment!
